Here's what I wrote in the "Definitive Proof of my Point" thread:
Quote:

Now, if an Ultra fired a larger-caliber round in its' secondary fire mode, much like a modern M-16 with it's "Master Key" attachment, I would buy that. It would require a second ton of ammo, much like the LB-X Autocannon requires a second ton of ammo to use its cluster munitions (or the user would have to pick between ammo types, but that's not the point).

In fact, that sounds like it would be an interesting weapon...

I went right out and drew up plans for such a weapon:

Weapon Name: Over-Under Autocannon
Weapon Type: Ballistic
Developing Faction: Davion (of course...)
Rules Level/Era: Level 2/3058
Mass: 10 tons
Crits: 6 slots
Heat: 2
Damage (normal mode): 4 points/shot
Damage (slug mode): 8 points/shot
Range (min/sht/med/lng): 0/6/13/20
Ammunition/ton (normal mode): 20/ton
Ammunition/ton (slug mode): 5/ton
Weapon Cost: 250,000/unit
Ammo Cost (normal mode): 10,000/ton
Ammo Cost (slug mode): 16,000/ton
Attack Type: Offensive
Works with Targeting Comp.
Ammo Explodes when hit

I don't know how to calculate battle value, and HeavyMetal couldn't take into account the secondary fire mode.

In normal fire mode, the OU-AC fires a normal stream of 28mm shells, the same as any other Autocannon. It is the secondary fire mode that differenciates this weapon from any other. Instead of firing the normal 28mm burst, the pilot has the option of firing a single 240mm slug.

In game terms, the pilot can choose to fire either in standard mode, doing 4 points of damage, or fire in secondary mode and dealing 8 points of damage. The weapon MUST have two tons of ammo, one of standard ammo, and one of slugs, giving the weapon an effective minimum tonnage of 12 tons.

P.S. I'm looking for something to change about the weapon. It doesn't quite look right to me. Can anybody suggest anything?

I haven't fully thought it through (it's late), but it looks interesting. I recall seeing a double-barreled derringer which fired a .22 round from the top and a 410 shotgun shell from the bottom. Is that what you mean by over and under?

That's it exactly. The main barrel is mounted over the secondary barrel.

Main, secondary, what's the difference?

That kind of hunting weapon is quite popular in Europe. Imagine a classic O-U shotgun with different barrels for different calibers. Sometimes you can swap out the barrels too, if you need to hunt something else. You could have the rifle equipped to fire almost any useful combination of bullet and shotgun shell, even if it's only single shots.

Two different barrels loading from two different magazines is a few orders higher in complexity. No wonder it can break.

Over-under has been ard for some time in the form of the M16 M203 attachment. Even older than that was the rifle grenade.
In the form of co-ax armaments the Whermacht had a 12.8cm main gun with a high velocity 7.5cm gun next to it. (And no! the barrel next to the M1 Abrams 12cm smoothbore is not a 2cm cannon but a .30cal.)
With all the tech advancements of the 31st century, I am sure this sort of stuff will be part and parcel of btech weaponry.
Just my 2 cents.
