These are all the lvl1 designs that I could find which are within 3% of the Battlevalue of the Rifleman 3N. Notice the designation, they aren't all the standard ones.
Now, which 'mech do you think is most powerful of the above? All right, the Rifleman has a bucketful of flaws,* but dammit! It's great value.
Why is there no P-Hawk above? Well, it is too expensive to partake, in any version! And the Vindicator, though only at 75% the Rifleman's weight, is even a full 103 points more expensive!
To be fair, there were also two 'mechs that were slightly too cheap to take part in the above: the standard Centurion. At 772 points it was just one point shy of the cut-off mark (the AC20 variant being a lot cheaper, and the laser variant way more expensive). Another 'mech at 772 points: the Charger-L!!
* I actually think that the only problematic flaw in the Rifleman is its 6-point armour head. Which is why I prefer the Blackjack for Mordel's Horde.
edit: should be Trebuchet 7K - apparently I cannot edit the poll itself....

The Jenner 7F can beat a Rifleman one-to-one.

The only flaw? How about too little AC ammo and too few heat sinks to really cut loose with the Large Lasers? It's a support mech that needs help!

HAHAHAHA! I really screwed myself with that post, didn't I?
Well, speak for yourselves, guys, but I find I get way more value out of my short 800 points in a Rifleman, than any of the others! Yes, the head is the biggest flaw. Come on! The Rifleman needs to overheat! Keeps the points down. Shoot 3/4 of the main weaponry - stay on 0 heat. Add a large laser in emergencies - ok, that's 8 heat, but that's ok. Use up the AC ammo - close, use the ML, generally go bananas.
I've had great success in the Rifleman. Now, yes, I realise that that munchy Jenner has great supporters. It is meant to have been long OOP in 3025, you know? Nothing but a first-run, a preproduction model!
And yes, I agree, it can beat a Rifleman. But the others have to at least try hard to beat the Rifleman! Come on, can I get an AYE?!?! It is the measuring stick for the others!
The Trebuchet is just plain weak compared to the Rifleman. It mounts as much armour but effectively half the weaponry. The only thing it has going for itself is that it mounts a weapon which can blow the Rifleman's head off.
Don't even get me started on the awful abomination that is the lvl1 Wyvern..... You need to play like in dense jungle for it to have a chance!
And the Blackjack. Well, guys, that would be my preferred ride in many instances. The BJ and the RFN are two of my top-5 out of the TRO. But, once again, there can be no denying: the Rifleman is the measuring stick. It has the greatest fighting chance against, say, a Warhammer (slim as it may be). I stick by it: you can't spend 797 points on a better fighting / supporting value!
edited some sentences, to actually make sense!

Hmm... I'd have to say Rifleman for practical reasons. I like to think in campaign terms and fluff terms about mechs. The Rifleman in 3025 is in common production, and a common sight in battle. The Jenner variant is long OOP in 3025, and pre-production version? How many of those are out there? Which one will you have an easier time buying spare parts for? _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

One reason to have a Rifleman, it looks so cool. Plus it is great to defend ammo dumps, HQ, mainteance locations, and infantry. It is kind of like the LAV, good tank for certain roles.
AWAD- First mech I ever drove, a Rifleman, and got owned by a Locust

My I am shocked, appalled, and hurt about the negative comments you said about the Trebuchet. It is not "just plain weak." At ten tons less, it has more speed, just as much armor, and nearly as much ammo. Their is a reason why it is considered a main line medium mech. Also I believe the firepower is quite impressive. Sure the LRM's damage potential is random, but that allows it to potentially deal more damage than the Rifleman. And also.... I just realized that you didn't say the TBT-5N, but instead you said the TBT-5k..... plz disregard my earlier comments and replace them with,
"Rifleman rocks!"

I'm sorry but the TBT-5K doesn't exist canon wise.

Mayhaps you meant the TBT-7K? Mounting a PPC, AC/5 and SRM-2?

@ Khayman: yeah, different variant! I love the Trebuchet very dearly! In fact, I am probably one of the board's greatest supporters of it!
@ Seraph: I know that..... damned typos! Thanks for pointing it out!
