Ruger already kinda posted something...but lets have an official topic where we can discuss it!!!

So...yeah. The scenes with Palpy and the Jedi sent to arrest him = awesome. The scream sent shivers up my spine.

And...of course...the LAVA! BWAAAHAHAAH!!! The lava is so gonna be the coolest thing in Star Wars ever.

The lava is going to be the most critical thing ever!

Come on, that is the one thing we've been hearing about, well, since the original movies! So everyone will have pretty strong preconceived ideas about it.

The fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin is going to make or break the whole sequel trilogy. If it turns out as epic as everyone will have believed it to be - hey cool! Suddenly all the countless flaws of the prequels will be forgotten!

Should they, however, f**k (sorry, am I allowed to spell this out? A couple of years ago, I would've been...) it up, well, the fans are going to be might pissed off, the believers will sway and doubt, and..... well all the previous stupid things that happened will be ever magnified.....

But yeah, Talen, I agree, the things I've heard from this could make it very cool. By the sounds of it, it will have as much lightsabre action as the other 5 films combined!!!!!!!!!

Just saw the preview in the theater over the weekend.

Lots of butt-kicking action. The space battle scenes look awesome.

I give it 10-1 against.

He's got so much ground to cover, so much to come back from, he's either going to have to disown I and II (maybe a good idea), move so fast the story will suck (most probable), get a better director (fat chance), pull something incredible out of his, um, keaster (this is Lucas we're talking about), or, (my bet) dazzle us with cool FX like a ship-to-ship battle, lots of lightsaber duels, and volcano lancing starfighters.

Like the Clone fight and the Yoda Duel, I imagine this will just get worse with age.

And yet, I'll sink the money into watching it anyway.

Your resident pessimist.

I'm so sick of Ep I and II bashing. They were FUN movies. Sure they had bad parts. Sure the directing and acting sucked. But does that make a movie NOT fun to go see?

If Star Wars 4-6 were released for the first time now, they would be bashed for their predictable characters, melodramatic action and laughable dialogue (except Han and Leia, which were always the high points of the movies). They were not amazing movies by any stretch of the immagination. They are so loved because its what most of us grew up on, and when the came out they were a new breath of life to Sci-Fi. Someone took Sci-Fi and made it look not so cheesy. Yay. The best part is that they were fun to watch. A few suprises here and there...but other than that there is nothing that has not been overdone for the last 500 years of story telling.

Anyways...the old Star Wars movies arent the end all to cinema...and the new ones are just as much fun, if you dont go in expecting the 2nd coming. If you cant see that...then get used to being dissapointed with everything in your life.

As I've contended elsewhere, what made the original Star Wars trilogy great was its tap into traditional epic sagas. It took itself seriously as a follower in the grand tradition of Homer, Virgil, Pyle, and the other great epic poets. Was it up to par? No, but it was still in that tradition.

For the prequels, Lucas turned his back on that tradition and corrupted it (honestly, love not only doesn't conquor evil, it activly promotes it! Why hasn't someone accused Lucas of mysogeny yet?). This is why I think it an accurate description to call the prequels "The Raping of my Childhood," though I think Roger Simon was being flipant when he said it. It's the corruption of a beautiful flower that was the epic tradition.

And he covers it with great FX. It's like a hooker with better makeup.

I have seen the new trailer. I'm still not optimistic, but from the longer trailer I see what looks like a return to the epic tragedy of the original prequels. I'll lower my odds to 8-1.

One thing I find funny about this is that once again Lucas has taken all of the fan rumors and such from the time the original three aired and up to the current two presquels and used it for his own. In away one could say this was his way of saying thanks to the fans or some could say he ran out of ideas. Frankly it doesn't matter.

When I watch Star Wars I am not looking for the greatest movie every made, sorry but that is not going to happen, I am looking for the story of a group people who rise up and fall down, just like real people do. This group just happens to have super cool ships and other neat things to use to either prevent things from getting as bad as they could or not. Sure somethings about the movies I could have lived without. Others are like footnotes in a book, they are there, you read them and that's it.

Overall Lucas has kept to the basics, we know very little about the early history, yes Dark Horse Comics and different things from the old West End Games SW RPG gave us hints about the time before the events in a Ep IV. As did the different novels that game out about Han Solo and Lando and the Marvel Comics take on the SW universe, hey they did have some good stories and they did put a nice novel/comic that had a story about Han and Chewie before meeting Luke, one about Leia and all she did before meeting Luke and few others in there as well. All fill in a few things. But again we don't have the whole thing.

The fight between Ankain and Obi-wan....has had more speculation about it then most moments in sci-fi/movie history. Rumors were flying in the mid 80s about those two fighting over an acid pit and Ankain fell in...and thus became Vader as a result of that, then the lava rumor came up, then one that mixed the two, another had Ankain get scared and messed up SAVING Obi-wan from falling into either acid or lava or a mixing of the two. Along with a spaceship crashing and thus crippling Anakin etc...Rumors abound, and the one thing they did was help keep the SW drive and dream alive.

The same type of rumors ran on and on about Bobba Fett and his contection to the Stormtroppers and such things...in one of the issues of SW Insider, the folks in charge at LF, clearly stated that they took the rumors on and about Bobba and ran with them. Again all of the hype and rumors and fan support kept the SW dream alive.

To me the third movie can stink, but as long as they can tie it into Ep IV and allow the fans enough room to add their take on things and wonder and give them something to believe in then nothing has been done wrong.

There are enough SW items out there to fill in a lot of the gaps and given the size of the SW universe I am sure that all can be used.

Telling prequels is always difficult too. "How do we get things to the terrible low that they are when things begin?" It would be like starting Babylon 5 at Season 4...then going back and watching 1-3. 4 has all the meaning, feeling, compassion and end-up goodness. It has all the conventional hero arcs...

Seasons 1-3 have all the crap leading up to why things are so craptacular in S4.

Its kind of hard to have a classic hero arc when the main character is going to f*** the galaxy in a matter of years. I think its an interesting tale of his spiral down into hell. Which is what this is. We should carry this discussion on somewhere a little more live though...I'm interested in what you have to say.

I could have sworn that one of the original trilogy books or Splinter of the Minds eye had something about lava being the reason.

As I recall, Ep I & II were also thought to be incredibly good when the previews were shown before they actually came out. And we all know how most people have felt about them afterwards. So personally, I wouldn't judge III too much based only on the previews just now.

All of what you've said above definitely applies to Episode II - when it was good, it was great! And I stand by that. Unfortunately, it also sporadically bombarded us with the worst things to have ever been put on the big screen as far as SW is concerned. (note: I've not seen the holiday special. But that wasn't put on the big screen, either)

Now, Episode I, I felt was kinda lazy. I especially loathed that pod race. And it was one of the set pieces of that movie! But it totally felt like a straight rip-off (not an homage or an "inspired by") from Ben Hur! And everything that seemed epic in the original movies wasn't there.

Now, that was totally different for Episode II. I really dug that movie, with some major reservations.

And I suspect that those major reservation will not be further fed in Episode III - after all, when there story wasn't driven forwards in Episode II, it was filled with a love story that, to me, was physically painful to watch. It felt soooo fake in its pseudo-naivety! I mean, it wasn't worthy to kiss the feet of the budding love story in Episode V! Which was filled with pep and friction!

So, now we get Episode III - but whenever the story isn't driven into the direction of the start of Episode IV, what are we going to get? Major killing, probably in conjunction with light sabres! And that is something that noone can argue with, something that Lucas has always kicked butt with!

jymset - of the opinion that Lucas was officially robbed of an oscar for sound (design) for Episode II!

As to all of this prequel bashing that was mentioned I just have to put in this one comment. Most us grew up with Star Wars so we fell in love with the cheesyness of them. When I look at the new movies, they are aimed at that same market segment only a generation later. So these movies are aimed not just at us, but also at our kids. Most 1st generation SW fans hate JarJar. My 3 year old loves him. I watch my son when he sees these movies and he is just as enthralled with them as we were when we were kids.

Just my 2 creds.

It is this same phanomina that makes me reserve judgement until I've seen it or any movie. A lot of people hate the movies and a lot of people love the movies (The same is true with the Lord of the Rings Movies).

It seems to me that if you go into the movie with a lot of built up expectations, and feel like you know what the story is all about, and how you would have done it and everything, then you will undoubtedly come out hating it. But if you go in with an open mind and no expecations, to just see the movie/ hear the story in a different medium, then you will most likely like it. Star Wars is a unique story for us, though. It is the only epic sotry made directly for the big screen. The man who wrote the story all those years ago, wrote it and made it for the Big SCreen. Unfortunately he chose a hard path when he made episodes 4, 5 and 6. As someone mentioned above, it is hard to go back and create characters that have already been made. When we all saw Episodes 4-6 for the first time, these characters were new to us. We didn't knoww anytihng about them, where they came form and all. But after having grown up with these Characters for so many years, we have all taken parts of them to heart, and identified with them in someway or another.

Now we arebeing forced to put aside our preconceptions aboutwhere they came form and who they are, and left the ORIGINAL Author/Creator tell us. So if you can do that, you will like the movies. If not you will hate them.

Me personally I don't care for Jar Jar, but I have kept an open mind. I don't necessarily think the Gungans had to be goofy like that, but I'm not the creator/author. Maybe Lucas had a reason for all of this when he wrote them that way. We'll never know. So go and enjoy the movies. And remember, they are just movies. A story told with moving pictures and sound, told to us directly by the author. It's his story not ours, despite how much some of us might believe to the contrary.
