How come a lot of you dislike these weapons so much?

Granted, an ER Micro Laser is weak compared to a Clan ER SL - it only has 2/3rds of the range and two of them do less damage than one SL. And they take up twice as many crits (though this can be a good thing) while causing as much heat. Ok, so these are only really good when compared to the IS SL. However, they aren't terrible. There could be instances where one just wants to roll many hit rolls, at point-blank range, where they could be advantageous.

Now, let's move to the Micro Pulse Laser - this thing rocks! It is basically an IS SPL at half the weight? Compared to the Clan SPL, it has half the range, but also only half the weight, half the heat and the same damage! How is this a bad gun?

Ok, there is always the comparison to the Clan ERSL. Many of you don't take that one seriously, either. But the Clan ERSL is one of those weapons that border on munchkinism, basically the most effective weapon when compared to weight, ever! Only the Heavy medium Laser does as much damage, but it is inaccurate and way hotter. The Heavy Small Laser is the only weapon that does more damage for weight, but that gun is a joke, sorry. Compared to the ERSL, it does 1 more damage, but at half the range with an inherent negative modifier....

Ok, back from the whole family of lasers to the Micro Lasers - they may not constitute the be-all-end-all, but they are, IMO, not bad guns per se.

What do you think?

Pack them on a fast mech and use a TC. Run up behind people and target a suitable torso location at point-blank range. Run away, attack again, rinse and repeat until people refuse to play with you anymore.

The problem with micro lasers isn't their performance, but the fact that they fill such a small niche. They are weapons that are ideal for hit and fade operations in very tight quarters. Examples of such terrain would be a dense city core or winding, narrow canyon systems.

Having said that, I feel that they're best suited for a light recon mech or a small recon hover vehicle, especially with the advent of clan combat vehicles.

The micro lasers are an interesting idea, and fill the role they're designed for well, it is just the fact that their usefulness on more open battlefields is rather limited.

Micro lasers are useful on small chassis like ProtoMechs (which they were designed for) small vehicles and Battle Armour. They pretty much are of little use on Battlemechs unless you are using level 3 fractional accounting and pretty much the same for vees unless you use Fractional accounting there (which is allowed for vees in level 2)I also have used them on aerospace to use odd quarter tons ( I have done so on my Dakota Sylph carrier.)
