*Enters the room carrying a giant pile of books in his arms, a laptop bag over his shoulder, and a pencil between his teeth*
I have taken it upon myself to instruct you all in the ways of l33t. I will cover here the history behind l33t, and its' commonly accepted tenets. Enjoy
L33t started as common misspellings typed in messages during the course of high-intensity video games, commonly first-person shooters and real-time strategy games, where spending too much time concentrating on typing can lead to a lost match. Eventually the misspellings became a trend among the gamer community, in the way that certain words can become slang and certain styles of dress can become fashionable. like during other trends, people eventually began looking for ways to expand the trend, in the way that slang terms can be shortened to just a word or two. In this case, words were changed. "The" became "teh", "elite" became "leet", and so on. After a while, characters were replaced with numbers, more for style than actual functionality. "teh" became "t3h", "leet" became "l33t", and so on. Quickly after this latest iteration of what had become known as "l33t speak" took hold, more and more outrageous replacements started to appear, not only replacing letters with numbers, but also replacing them with chains of symbols, in a sort of contest to see who could replace the most letters in their sentences while still being able to play effectively.
Now, we're moving on to technique, and how to put together a sentence in l33t.
First off, we have the basics: altering the spelling of words. Perhaps the words most common are "hacker", "hacks", and "newbie". The replacements almost always have the same general sound of the word. Also common is using an advanced word as a root word. For example, "hacked" is normally rooted in the word "hack". In l33t, however, "hacked" becomes "hackered", rooted in the word "hacker".
Example 1: That nooB! He must have Hax!
Example 2: Haxxor! Stop Haxxoring!
Example 3: We've been Haxxored!
now we're covering the second most common form of l33t: replacing letters with numbers. A becomes 4. E becomes 3. S becomes 5. These are the most common forms of l33t.
Example: l33t 5p43k
Next, we have the most advanced form of l33t speak: replacing letters with symbols. This is the most diverse and complicated version of l33t, as it encompasses any and all letters that can be replaced by a series of symbols found on the standard keyboard, which is quite many. Even I prefess to having a limited knowledge of this form of l33t, as complex as it can be, but I will try to convey what I know. As stated before, and combination of symbols can be used to replace letters, as long as all the symbols together approximate the letter they are being used to replace. "H" can be replaced with two vertical lines and a hyphen, for example, becoming "|-|". "N" can be replaced with a pair of vertical lines and a slash, becoming "|\|". "T" can be replaced by one symbol, a "+".
Example: |-|ere |s a|\| exa|\/|p|_e of rep|_ace|\/|e|\|+ c|-|arac+ers.
As you can see, the third form of l33t can be extremely complicated, and can be hard to understand, unless you know exactly what you are looking at.
I hope you have enjoyed this class, and have found it informative. Feel free to experiment, and above all, have fun with it!

This is just a little bit like trying to justify that absolutely atrocious error in your Ph. D. disertation that you know is wrong, but it slipped in and you can't really admit that. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

I take it less as people trying to be 'kewl', and more that they dont know how to spell.

Precisely. I mean, I've written a few "teh"s myself, but that's a typo. These people just seem not to know any better.

Especially when your leet writing causes odd fomatting in the forum. Note that your example is incomplete (the full sentance doesn't show up), and that the end of your post is white.

Because it was an easy A, and I need to raise my GPA.

Our standards are low, but at least we have some.

I am not as adverse to L33t as most I guess, but I do see the need to keep it clear of sites like this. I have enough trouble reading posts from the couple we had earlier this year that kept dropping spaces and capital letters.

We have to keep our standards low. After all, those of us mercs can't always afford the good stuff.

I agree. My 13 year old daughter has gotten into using the L33T SP33K on IM's. sigh
It is highly annoying as she will try to use it in normal conversation. She thinks it makes her cool. She sounds like the retards in my "special" class.

THAT's just stupid. L33t belongs online, not in normal conversation.
Tell her to stop: she's making other gamers look bad.
