ok, I wanna write a novel or short story. I wanna set it in the BTU, but, I wanna focus on infantry fighting too. Do infantry still use like ballistic weapons? Or are they're now like laser rifles and stuff. I wanna also have nowadays weapon manufactures, but I could make my own. I just don't wanna write a novel that has mechs as 90% of the book, I wanna make something about 50/50. Any ideas?

Get ahold of MW 3rd ed, and LosTech. They have almost all of the current infantry weapons systems listed. The TROs 2750 and 3026 also have some, but the 2750 deals with Star-League era gear.
I would also recommend that you take a good look at some actual infantry tactics; unlike mechs and other combat units, infantry really hasn't been touched on in the novels' so there's really no precedent for them.

Which is my point. Mech's can blow a lot of stuff up and are the lions of the battlefield, but infantry have to clear the buildings and secure them. Plus, a special-ops squad of infantry is that THAT much more stealthy when compared to mechs...a satchel charge of C4 levels a building just as gone as a barrage of laser fire.

Ok....so far, the premise for the novel is here for enjoyment/critism. Please people, throw your comments out at me, cause I'm shooting in the dark.
-------------------------------------------
Ares Corporation is the owner of the most notorius mercenary group in existance, the Black Mantas. Ares corp. backs them with clan technology after some of the IS guardian (I forget the name, and classicbattletech.com is down) clans form together, hoping to push the invader clans back farther though the use of the Black Mantas. The Mantas aren't cheap by a long shot, but are the best of the best. Composed of elite aerotech, mech, and infantry assets, they are true soldiers of fortune. They're infantry divisions are the best of the best. Fighting with brand-new equipment and over-the-edge tactics, they are superior to any other special-ops infantry group. Fighting with IS tactics and Clan tech, they are undeniable. Loyal, incredible, and unstoppable: Black Mantas.
---------------------------------------------
First chapter will be posted later this week. I have a problem though: I'm not sure about "black mantas". "dead cell" or "red cell" sound really sweet, but the first is a rip off of MGS2 which ripped off the real "red cell" (which, BTW, was a group of navy-seal trained terrorists that took over subs, military bases, and even Air Force One. I thought that was pretty cool). Any ideas?

Infantry still use ballistic weapons in Btech. It's just that there are also futuristic weapons available such as laser rifles. Use whatever you like.
As for the stoy, it sounds quite . . . uh . . . uber.

the energy weapons are more or less better off than their ballistic counterparts.
and if you're going for the elite here, they would be equiped with laser rifles (pulse is a plus).
they should also be using something along the lines of stealth type battlearmor.
ie. remember the DEST in their Kage suits in the first few novels of Twilight of the Clans?
yeah like that type of stuff.
by 3060ish laser rifles are becoming more and more common , but only in the better infantry units.
Clan infantry weapon is going to be damn near imppossble to get.

Well, anyone see any logical errors in this or have any suggestions? Problem is I really like ballistic infantry weapons. And I still need a name for them...

But a few things are still required.
1. What type of training are they? Some average infantry unit? Green Berets? SAS? Spetznaz? What? It makes a difference.
2. What is this units reputation? Are they widely known and feared? Are they some official's secret weapon?
3. Where do they come from? Davion? FWL?
You need to get all these questions answered before you can really do anything. (IE: They're the FRR equivalent of the Marine Corps snipers, but they're deliberately kept in secret because the FRR wants to make it seem like the team doesn't exist until it's too late.) This is also good advie when dealing with the MW3 character creation process: you need to have at least a rough idea of what you want these guys to be and what you want them to do before you go create them.

Green Berets, Spetsnaz, GSG-9, Ghurkas, SEALS....these all still exist in MW3?
wow.
I want it to be kind of an unabridged novel, with no really big binding ties to something "official". I just wanted to take the BT "mech" idea and expand it to make infantry and vechiles a bigger role, then write a novel about a group of mercenaries that are elite-trained guys. I wanted to make it almost present day, but with the addition of space travel and mechs with lots of cool tech. One idea I had not relating to mechs was the land warrior system that Tom Clancy expanded on: backpacks with compters wired into them with cd drives and a headset to upload/download information from CO to soldier, to assist targeting and navigation, and for battle status. I want to keep beam weaponry only for mechs, and keep nice good-old assault rifles and handguns for the troops, albeit with these advanced computers and/or armor.
What I think I'll end up doing is continueing the original chapter I made of the book, which is a nice battle encompasing everything I want. I'll post it, take the advice, and go from there.

I'm not saying that they do or don't; I was just raising them as ideas.

The two Infantry Battalions in my Merc unit use mainly ballistic weapons. Federated Long Rifles (M-16 knock-off), for the common infanteer, Portable MG (Canadian C-6) for platoon weapons deteachment, Support MG (.50 cal) for Weapons Platoon. Also VLAW, mortars, grenades, etc... to round out the TO&E. I like this stuff, because it's what I know best, (I use this stuff in real life, so go with what you know!). Plus, it's cheaper!

point taken...ok, i've decided to go with ballistic weapons for the infantry, saying this helps with the upkeep of the mech regiment. Besides, I got a lot of ideas thta will only work with ballistic weapons (well, work best with them anyways. Plus, a SOCOM is so much cooler than a phaser). You gotta wait until you read about my "CTA" armor and weapons. They're so sweet. _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Anything I say will undoubtedly incriminate me.

They just give to officers to make them feel important. Let us hope and pray they do not use them....
