I'm just kinda curious as to which ones everyone things makes better pets.
I, myself, prefer cats. On the whole, they tend to be softer to the touch, a bit gentler, and less work. Dogs are loud, often smelly, and kinda disgusting (in that they eat shit, literally!). This may be that I've only had BIG dogs (Bouviers, my mom has a thing for them), but with three cats in the house right now, my leanings are obvious.

I prefer dogs myself but as we have 2 dogs, 3 cats, and a bunch of fish, it's kinda hard to be negative towards any of them. Got to liking cats after we got a kitten for my daughter. It had crawled up on my lap, curled up, and fell asleep. Previously I had hated cats, but I just couldn't move at all for fear to disturb such a tiny little kitten. Damn them for being cute, damn them!!

Gotta go with the kitties on this one. Small, soft, and cute. Neat, clean, and affectionate in just the right amounts.

Dogs, quite frankly, frighten me. The bigger the dog, the more frightened I become. Dunno why, but when I see someone walking their golden retriever (or dachsund, or whatever) down the street, I have a great urge to run the other way. Since I can barely stand even being close to one, I've ruled them out as pets.

They're both poison to me.

You forgot about two possibilities. Neither and both (I like both).

I have a preferance for cats for a variety of reasons.Cats are self cleaning, you can leave a bowl of food out and they will eat only what they need at the time and if there is extra they will leave it for later dogs on the other hand will eat untill the eat it all ,get sick or both.Cats will use a litter box dogs have to let out ...usualy at a set time or you will find a mess on the floor.Dogs need a regular set schedual cats are more independant and allow you to have an erratic schedual if need be.Cats are MUCH quieter than dogs.

I have both, three cats and two dogs...so it's kind of split.

They both can be excellent pets.

I've never had either, but I've spent time with relatives who have both. (Different relatives.)

Cats are more self-sufficient and generally easier to deal with. They also don't feel the need to say hello whenever they see you; sometimes they will, but they're just as likely to just sit there. WHich is the primary advantage of cats - they don't want as much attention, and so don't end up becoming annoying (not generally, just at that moment.)

**** straight Pinhead.
Dog teeth are big and not overly sharp... Cat teeth are like needles... and I don't like needles.

I think, despite my previous post, I am more of a dog person. A big dog person. But that may have something to do with the fact that I am a little too hyper at times and big dogs usually seem to like to be glomped.

Yes, dogs are usually louder than cats. Until you get a spoiled cat who learns that she can get what she wants by yowling. Or a siamese. No dog can live up to that amount of noise.
And if you think cats are clean, why is it that so many people are hospitalized with life-threatening infections after being clawed by a cat? Have you ever read anything that shows what is under a cat's claws or in their saliva? Yuck...
Actually, not all dogs will eat themselves sick. But many cats will. Probably almost as many cats will do something like that then there are dogs who will.
Dogs can be trained to use a littler box as well, small dogs at least, but that it only for the reason that you are unable to find a box big enough for a big dog to use. And with dogs, they will only make a mess if they are unable to hold it anymore. Cats will make a mess just to get back at you for something.
Plus, dogs can be trained not to chew or destroy, but I have never seen anyone who has successfully trained a destructive indoor cat to stop destroying things. But then again, as I already said, I am a parrot person, so who I am to say cats are destructive or loud.

Actually, I love cats. And dogs. And parrots. I have yet to meet an animal I do not like... except maybe humans...

I have always had dogs. Both of the ones I had were outdoor dogs so I never worried about mess. The Lab was fun you could really get into a good wrestling match with her.

People are also forgetting 1 thing.... Loyalty. A dog will love you no matter what. Cats will crap in your shoe when they are mad at you. Nuff said.

Yeah, cat's do leave the occaisional hairballs, which i'm surprised that nobody has mentioned. If you want to avoid that, get a longhair or a short hair. I've found its the medium hairs that spit them up.
Also, avoid wet food. it only leads to vomit.

In my experience, I have found that cats tend to be more intelligent (not by much), and more evil than dogs. They can also become extremely loyal to the person that they love the most, to the point that they will hide illness and pain just so they can be with them. I had a cat for 13 years, and we had her put down last july becuasue of a tumor in her stomach. To the end, she would spend as much time with me as she could, and no matter how miserable she was feeling, she would purr whenever i touched her.

I also prefer to have one of my cats with me on the bed at night, because they take up alot less space than a Bouvier de Flanders.

If anyone does not know that breed of dog, it's a big, black, stupid cattle herder, used as a dog of war in world war 1.
