While its good to surprise your opponent, but not at the cost of usage. The Awesome, or another Warhammer or Archer would be your best options.

Typical Lyrans.
Still a fast heavy or moderately speedy medium is a better choice than another stompy assault or heavy A slow large bore ac carrier will be very nice though..

Hey, its a heavy lance. You should keep all the mechs the same relative size. A medium mech is just a bad idea, outgunned. And recon elements are for scouting...

Yup, the Zeus is a good scout.

I still stay with a P-hawk. twin Lg's and maneuverability.

And it has large ammo bay for prolonged missions and full armor. As it was already said: good scout!

I've never been very big on the Zeus. Too undergunned for an assault. It's like an oversized Centurian. Being just a medium, it sort of works for the Cent, but not the Zeus.
I had thoughts for adding an Awesome into the lance, but the weaponary is too one-sided. I'm looking more for a balanced layout if possible.
While speed is good, I don't think throwing a fast medium, or heavy, into the lance works either. Just doesn't really fit with the rest of them. Although I did think about tossing in a Quickdraw for about all of one minute, then decided it on being too crunchy.
Also thought about a Rifleman, but again, too crunchy. Just doesn't have enough armor. Although it would make for a good decoy for the rest of the lance. For the 2-3 rounds before it dies. Given that in most games that I've played, the Rifleman always seems to get targeted first for that fact of being an easy kill.
Would have liked to maybe have an Archer in it, but since I already have the Crusader and Stalker, the lance would become far too missile heavy.
I would probably just throw in another Warhammer, but I don't have any more spare unseen hammies minis that I can paint up to use in the lance.
And so, as it stands right now, I am mostly leaning towards using a Thunderbolt as my 4th.
Oh, I suppose I should point out that this lance is suppose to be a sort of Command/Assault lance. The CO generally drives either the Stalker or the Warhammer, depending on his mood.

As an assult/command lance the Thunderbolt would fit in well. In both eras, it has a good setup and stays tough. As you're unit progresses into the level 2 era, think about adding a C3 network. It's expensive but as ralgith showed me, it's very worth it.

I agree with generalstoner a grasshopper is a good choice. i would personally use the GHR-5N upgrade and then a varient on GHR-6K I just thought up. Remove the ER Large Laser, the Streak SRM-4 and ammo, and the now-useless CASE. Replace with a ER-PPC, a half ton of armor, and 2 extra Heat Sinks. It ugrades the long-ranged fire power and you would have enough Heat Sinks to Apha Strike for a round or two and not build up much heat if any. It's been so long since I played that I forgot how to calculate how much heat movement generates. _________________ "All it takes for evil to prevail is for good to do nothing."

1 point for walking, 2 points for running, 1 point per hex jumping, witha minimum total of three.
The Grasshopper is a surprisingly useful design. It is possible that I'm saying that because one killed my utterly in a game a few years back. My poor 3055 era Thunder got shot in the face with a PPC from a Marauder II, then a 3025 era Grasshopper flying-leap-kicked my head into the upper stratosphere (DFA, just adding some flare).
