Well I just upgraded my PC From an AMD Athalon 1.3 GHz to a Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz, with a brandnew motherboard. Well it turns out that my "old Seagate 40Gig HD doesn't work in my new computer, as it is an ATA drive, and my new MSI motherboard only supports, IDE, Ulta ATA and Serial ATA. Is it possible to get my old hardrive to work, short of sticking it back in my old computer and burning all the data I need to CDs and moving it that way?
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

Do you have a router at home? Else, you can spend some cash to get a USB external hard drive casing. that might work and u can still use it for backup.

As far as I know, EIDE is ATA which means that any ATA drive should work on you IDE cables. Ultra ATA just indicates a faster transfer speed on ATA devices via your IDE ports.
Have you tried just plugging your HD into the new board?

I'll explain this a bit more in depth.
In my old computer I had two HDs, 1 Western Digital 20gig, and 1 Seagate 40gig. The WD had windows 98Se on it, and the Seagate had XP Professional on it. They were both hooked up via IDE in my old computer. When I put them in the new computer, the motherboard via IDE, the motherboard could not recognize the Seagate drive, but it did recognize the WD drive and it would actually try to load Windows 98SE from it.
I guess I could try to get an external HD case and hook it up via USB. If I can find a external hard drive case. My access to parts is severely limited over here.
It took my over a month to receive my new motherboard and CPU from the States. But I ordered them from Fry's Outpost.com and they failed to mention to me when I ordered them that they wer eout of stock and no longer carried until very late in the game. I also orderd a new hard drive (SATA) and an ATI Radeon X700 Pro, 256MB Ram PCI Express Video card, and those took almost 40 days ot get here since they failed to ship them priority.

For simple stuff, why not look locally? An external HD case is the same in Japan as in America, right?

Something else you might look at on your HDs. What is the RPM rating of the drives. New motherboards are not backwards compatible with older, slower HDs. Also check the speed of the CPU, RAM and other drives. You cannot run a faster drive and a slower drive, the slower drive will not be able to keep up. You would have to use the slower drive as a master and the faster as a slave.
Next time, check out tigerdirect.com.. They have as good if not better that what Fry's carries.
Later...

Alexis,
All my drives are 7200RPM. I tried connecting each drive individually as well as playing with te mast/slave options. I think it comes down to the fact that my motherboard currently only supports IDE, Ultra ATA and Serial ATA. As for why it doesn't recognize the ATa drive, which connects via IDE, I have no idea. The drive shoulds be good, as it was working the night before with no problem.
I actually got my memory and ended up ordering my motherboard and CPU from Tigerdirect.com, and they all got here within 10 days of ordering. No more Outpost.com for me, too much hassle and not enough action on their part.

Well like I said, IDE is ATA. It is just 2 names for the same thing. SATA is the only thing different.
As for why it does not work, i am stumped.

As am I. Me and a friend spent over 6 hours trying to get it to work before we gave up and just installed my new SATA drive.

What exactly does the drive do when you connect it and boot the machine?
Does the machine not find it at all?
-There should be tools in the BIOS for that.
-Always use one of the old 40-pin cables with the old drives.
-Use the Master/Slave jumpers.
-Make really, really sure the power cable is plugged in.
Or does it find the drive but hangs on boot?
Have you wiped the old XP installation from the drive? It WILL cause this if you switch to a different motherboard.
edit: you said "moving data" so I guess you haven't wiped it. Just stick it in your old machine and burn the important bits to CD, you'll get off easiest that way. There's ways around it if you're willing to try the WinXP recovery console, but you'd need a printout of the instructions and it could still fail.

When I start the computer is says something along the lines of it can't load because it has detect major hardware changes. Then when I look at the BIOS for the motherboard, it doesn't see the drive at all. It is all very weird.
I've tried manipulating every combination of slave and master/single drive jumpers that I could think of. but it just doens;t want to load from that drive or at all when it is connected. We checked to make sure that we had the correct cable. I was using the same cables I had before. We made sure everything was connected properly and securely. No I didn't wipe the old XP installation from the old drive, not sure how to do that without loosing all my other data.
As for contacting tech support, I did so and I am waiting somewhat impatiently for them to respond.
I ordered a External HardDrive case form Tigerdirect.com last night, so hopefully it will be here by the end of next week.
I'll keep everyone updated about this strange problem.

It's not a strange problem. It's what you can expect from WinXP when you change the machine too much. I made that same mistake once, so these days I keep lots of stuff on a separate old HDD.

Use the Recovery Console off the WinXP CD. IIRC the Fixboot\rebuild is the command you want. If not, google for the exact error message and ways to fix it.
