I don't play any of the tabletop games, but I love Mechwarrior 2 (I keep classic on my mac so I can play it) and I've read most of the Battletech and Mechwarrior novels. I'm writing a short fanfic about a member of a Federated Suns unit that gets wiped out to a man by the Lyrans, and one member of the unit escapes in his mech. He then causes havoc among the population and turns the people on the planet to the FC.
Anyway, I need to know what the difference is between Hatchetmans, Nightskys, and Axemans. I really like axes on mechs and so I plan the main character to have one but I need to know which mech to use. What weapons do they have other than axes? How fast? What's the tonnage? Anywhere I can find these out?
Thanks.

Not wanting to sound too anal but there is a TRO section at the site navigation bar.
Mordel is kind enough to upload most, if not all of the stock TRO designs there. You can filter for the info there.

For such a situation I, for one, would prefer the Nightsky. With an almost exclusively energy-based loadout, it would be the more logical choice for an extended campaign away from supply bases (like a guerilla war). It's also faster (having a top speed of just over 97 KPH, compared to the Hatchetman or Axeman's 65 KPH), which allows it to close to melee range much more easily.

Some more Hatchet-wielders:

Maybe I forgot some more. Were just examples!

Axes are a waste of space and tonnage on mechs...

Hmmm..... Might have to play Chi someday, with a lance of axe-wielding mechs.

My kick is one easier to hit, and every time I hit the kick hits your legs. When I hit your mechyou must make a pilot check. I can also fire every weapon I have.
You swing a hatchet and it hits me full body, and you can't fire weapons at me mounted in your arm.
Plus with the weight of the hatchet you have I'll mount an extra LPL or a couple MPL and turn you to slag before you can ever get close enough to hit me.

BOOYAH!
But I do find axes are good for close combat when the heat starts scaling.

That's two harder to hit than kicking and you can't fire anything when you declare it.

Perfect for fast hover tanks that have lost their turrets!

Chihawk is correct.
The most effective physical attack in terms of to hit, and directed damage is the kick.
