How do you go about reducing the enemy to scrap metal to be salvaged and sold to Bob's used 'Mech Emporium? Do you go for heavy and slow units, or speedy 'mechs. Long-range bombardment or up close and dirty with the medium lasers and the AC/20?
I tend to favor a nice combination of the two personally. I usually play Kurita units, so I've got a nice selection of speedy little Jenners and the mobile long-range firepower of a Dragon or Grand Dragon. Throw in a few Panthers to support the heavy 'mech's advance, and you are in good shape.

Whatever works with the stuff I have. Fast hover vehicles and light mechs for screening and harassment. Heavy tanks and infantry for ambushes. Medium and heavy mechs to hold the line. Assault mechs for specialist duty, aka clobbering the opposition flat.

Dragons, Grand Dragons, Panthers, and the 120 foot jumpers dominate my main battle line. But, honestly. I see a lot of Assassins, Jenners, Spiders, PPC Cicadas, Hussars in my force as well.
I have a habit of chipping away armour and morale with my fast units pinning things down, then bringing up the Panthers and the slower mechs to pound the enemy at range while they're harassed in close by fast movers.
Course, I'm also fond of the fast mechs retreating towards my lines as the Archers and Crusaders lay down Thunders inbetween the enemy and myself to keep the ranges wide. I've never really been comfortable closer than 7 hexes to an opponent. I see too many AC 20s against me so I stick in the long range of those kind of weapons and chip my way in.

I LOVE vehicles, Battle Armor, and Aerospace fighters; the so-called "support units".
I can usually squeeze in at least two vehicles for every 'mech when stacking up BV, with Armored infantry filling out the ranks. If my opponent agrees, I'll usually throw in an aerofighter as well.
While the other guy has a bunch of 5/8 or 4/6 walking fortresses, I can zip around in my swarms of 6/9 Musketeers, my 8/12 Pegasi or Saladins... Add to that my Kage and/or Cavalier squads, and he's in trouble.
It doesn't always work, however. I've had battles where my vehicle forces got shot apart in less than ten turns thanks to the crummy vehicle-crit rules and some lucky die rolls on the part of my opponent.

Agreed I to love vehicles but the damage table can either be fore or against you. if your opponet has a hot hand your in big trouble. But I as well like the LRM and SRM launcers with a Shriek or 3 and a couple alacorns, I then usually fill out the rest of the unit with either VTOL's or fast hovercraft. Loved the battle with a company of IS armor against 3 full starts of front line clans. After 10 rounds I had lost 1 vehicle and had 3 or 4 disabled. He withdrew with 5 semi-operational mechs.
Mmmmm the salvage was good that day

Playing the FRR side will give me limited Lyran and DCMS tech for both sides.
Main attackers will be fast speedy units like Jenners and Dragons backed by panthers for long ranged support.
Heavier support firepower can be called upon the ever popular Zeus found commonly in the FRR and of course the Hunchy for those city fights.
post 3050 will see several Comstar/FRR techy designs but the formula won't change too much.
P.S. Not forgetting infantry and vehicles of course.

I tend to go for a mixed unit of Vehicles and Mechs. Like Warhammer, i love to use vehicles because the crit table seems to make people believe they are useless.
As a rough guide i use a mixed force of Mediums. I never stray to heavy or too light and tend to keep Assaults to a back up roll so consequentially Awesomes and the like are my choice.
Cheap Mediums are always a whoop in battle. An enemy beset by four Enforcers will be hard pressed to counter effectively four jumping buggers hopping everywhere. Also Coupled with a few medium vehicles such as Condors anhd other hovers my force seems to do a good job of splitting the enemies fire to reduce his overall knockout punch.
The mediums and a single Assault really creates a top heavy unit but one which draws the opponents attention to the biggy. Thinking they can bring it down and pick off the lighter members after. The AC10 and Large Laser is great for taking thingsd down quickly and in one piece.
That said, the tactic has its weaknesses. Cleaver opponents can see my plan for what it is. Once of twice ive had my Awesome drawn off to one side (thinking i had the upper hand and my diversion was working!!) only to find that its beset upon close fast fighters which pounce across to quickly help its allies with the Enforcers. My opponent used Spiders for this and like a fool i fell for it thinking they were easy pray for a PPC. The Awesome was left alone in the wilderness while a hunchy took it on at close range as the Spiders jetted off and helped the besieged Atlas.
Another time the same happened again however my Condors saved me with a few lucky hits on the light mechs legs. Knocking them down.
Its a good tactic but a clever enemy can sneakily draw you in and beat you at your own game. And trust me, they can! its difficult to effectively watch all the enemies moves.

Ill use whatever is avaible, but if I have a choice, Ill try flanking you with a fast element or two, and have the main part of my force smashing you with their killer weapon systems at whatever range they have.

I simply compare my units advantages to the other units disadvantages and exploit them.
I prefer speed, but as Chihawk's E-Mail games show, a big slow thumper can work also.

I try and use the advantages of the mech I'm using to exploit the weaknesses of the mech my opponent has.
I also do other things, but like a good poker player does, I make my opponent figure them out.

If I have air superiority I love using bombers. If your enemy is bunched up, even you miss you stand a pretty good chance of hitting something on the scatter. I don't know how many assault lances I've mauled this way.

I like a mix up like this:
Scout Lance:
2 Lights (Jenners are about my style here...)
2 Fast Mediums, Not ultra fast... something like the Wolf Trap and others.
Battle Lance:
Either 4 mediums with a good mix of ranged and close in weaponry, or 3 mediums and a heavy.
Command/Assault Lance:
This lance is quite a variable thing with me. It can include anything from mediums to assaults, and often ends up as a single fast medium, 2-3 heavies, and maybe a single assault. If it does include an assault Mech, that Mech is either the commander or his bodyguard. Mechs I like to play in this lance include the Marauder, Thunderbolt, Wolf Trap, Centurion, Thunder Hawk, Warhammer, and a few others.
A lot of my style of play depends on who I'm facing, and whether or not they RP their faction. For instance, if I'm playing a person who does RP and plays clanners I'll usually obey the Clan ROE for most of the fight. However if they don't RP I'm gonna gang up on them by lance. Also how I play is based on the faction I'm playing. If I play clanners, I obey they ROE, and if I play Kurita I follow Bushido.
Other than those things I like to use mixed tactics, get up close with those units that are capable and can handle it while pounding away from longer range with support units. For example, I would team up a Jenner and a Dervish, getting in close with the Jenner to slag armor with the lasers while my Dervish supports.
I also like to be flexible, be able to change my tactics at a moments notice to be able to follow the flow of the battle and my opponents movements better. Thats why I don't usually play more than 1 or 2 assault mechs in my forces unless they are random rolled. Yes they pack a lotta firepower, but they just aren't maneuverable enough to keep up with quick changes in the situation.

Of corse, the on-board weapons can also maul them. I like sending in fighters loaded with a bunch of bombs stuck on their wings or in a bomb bay...plenty of fireworks...

I mostly work solo, taking one or two Mechs on skirmish ops. I prefer cat-and-mouse when I use my Wolfhound, and rush in all guns with a Widowmaker. Both I do use terrain to my advantage.
