I have a question about torpedos under the game rules.

Do they have to be underwater all the way from the launcher to the target, or would it be sufficient if the target was in a water hex?

p. 88 and 89, old Master Rules

Torpedoes

Torpedoes are short- and long-range missiles specially designed to function underwater, and they use the same statistics as their land-based counterparts. Torpedoes may only be fired from and into the Water hex of Depth 1 or greater, and the attacker must trace LOS through water hexes of depth 1 or greater. Units equipped with torpedo racks cannot use normal missile ammo, and torpedo ammunition will not fit in missile racks.

Make a rule for ASROCs

Mayby a .25 ton, 5 dmg 1 shot missile that can be used as a torpedo or a surface missile with the range of an LRM?

It would violate the rules...no attack can penetrate the surface of the water in either direction.

Chihawk is the resident guru around here, but I thought Lasers could shoot out of water.

In the real world, maybe. In Battletech, nope.

Torpedos can be mounted on non-naval vessels provided two qualifications are met:

1. Not only must the target be in a water hex, but there must be at least one water hex adjacent to the target that is within LOS of the launcher.

2. The launcher can be no more than 3 levels in height above the target.

This rule also modifies the official rule that the surface of a body of water cannot be broken by weapons fire; instead, energy weapons (not counting flamers) can break from both directions and torpedos can break from above.

Then it would be possible to make SSNs with Arrow IV launchers to act as ballistic missile subs. As long as they surface, piror to firing, that is. And make ASW VTOLs that move within 3 hexes of the waters surface to fire torpedos at them......
Hmmmm..... That could make for an interesting game..........

I'm quite sure we have attack subs and helicopters like that today...

But seriously, the torpedo rule doesn't say the launcher has to be under water. It only says you must fire it from, through and to depth 1 or deeper water hexes.

And surface navy may attack underwater targets. It's mechs and units on the beach or in the air that aren't allowed to fire through the water surface.

You'd also now have to change the rule that says LOS doesn't exist between units under the water and units above the water...

The rule doesn't say that. No fire may pass thru the surface of the water. In fact, the surface of the water blocks LOS (which is why mechs get partial cover in depth 1 water).

Surface ships may only engage targets above the water, submarines can only engage units below it.

Read the Underwater LOS table, BMR revised page 94.

"Attacker surface navy" has a full row of YES markings.

"Attacker uderwater" may attack both underwater and surface navy.

I would interpret the rules as follows:
Surface ships can shoot all standard weapons only at ground-targets or surfaced subs;
surface ships can fire at targets under water only with torpedoes (mounted under the waterline of the ship).

Surfaced subs were treated like surface ships
(standard weapons above the waterline [think of the shore-bombardment capability of the Neptune] and torpedoes under the waterline)

Subs under water can fire at underwater targets and surface ships with all weapons able to fire underwater (Lasers,PPC´s and torpedoes).
