The important part of it:
As with individual nanotubes, when you pass an electrical current through a nanotube sheets, then things really get cooking. For example, if the nanotubes are electrically injected with electronic charge to slightly change their structure, this charge injection can make the sheets move, generating the force and stroke needed for an artificial muscle. Electrical current can also induce the sheets to emit heat at infrared wavelengths or higher-energy wavelengths of light.
What ya think? Looks close enough to me.

Hmmm...
From the "important part", it sounds promising. However (man, I tend to rain of everyone's parade these days), it would still have an insanely long way to go before it can be put to use moving even a 20 tonner.
A few more year's worth of research, and who knows?

You realize that with this technology, the only thing stopping BattleMechs from being a reality is a compact, efficient fusion reactor?
For the armor, I hear that the stuff on the M1A1 Abrams if fairly tough, but if there is something tougher by all means, speak up.
Internals. Theyre looking at a type of carbon fiber (if I recall correctly) that actually heals itself if damaged. I would have to do some digging to be sure, but I know Ive read about them, or seen them on the Discovery Channel.
Neurohelmet. The USAF was, at one point, experimenting with flying a plane without a joystick or rudder pedals. They scan the pilots alpha waves via the helmet, and project it onto a screen (for training purposes) With practice, the pilot can alter his alpha waves and manipulate a dot on the screen, representing various maneuvers such as banking or climbing.
LRMs and SRMs. Already have them in one way or another. No brainer stuff, here.
Lasers. It would take some refinement, but the current breed of lasers can be put to use. The USAF has a Boeing jet equipped with a chemical-cell laser for use in shooting down ICBMs.
Machine guns. Well, duh.
Flamers. See Machine Guns.
PPCs. Okay, this one is going to take lots of work. Essentially, and if I read the novels and tech books right, its a lightning gun. Im not sure if we have anything remotely resembling this kind of stuff right now.
Gauss Rifle. Ive heard that this one is being worked on, but is very very bugy.
Fusion reactors. Fusion reactors CAN be built currently. What we cant do, quite, is make them self-sustaining. Again, with some more work....
Give it a few decades and, yeah, we could see Mackies being deployed. "President moves in heavy 'Mech division. Bush 'not ***king around anymore' ".

Didn't the British start research into some kind of powered armor a few years back? SOmething about replacing there Challenger MBT's or something?
I'll have to look it up but I know the concept of at least battle armor is being looked at by darpa and a few other organizations.

Main problem with mech would be, if they are practical. Large and tall targets ...
