The Curse was made by a friend of mine around 1988! At this time we balanced our forces by tonnage and my friend often had 10t left after picking his favorit mechs!
So he designed a 10t Mech with level 1 tech
(level 2 wasn´t "invented" yet!).

He used it as a scout (by the motto from my signature!) and to outflank the enemy for disturbing him.
(Some players really went mad with an enemy mech behind them, splitting their forces to hunt it down!)

This one is my highspeedversion of the Curse with a reasonable range but without any substantial armor! It wasn´t designed to be hit and Pulse Lasers or TC´s didn´t exist in it´s time!

Quite similar to Mite posted by Karagin, so my comments are quite true here - stay in the open and far from enemies. With 10t mechs there aren't many options in lvl 1, so the mechs are quite similar to each other.

The curse is good for the tech, but the chance is ick. You simply cannot skimp on armor on a mech that small, no matter the roll. A stray SRM will demolish it.

I´ve driven 3 engagements with the Chance.
In the first two of them it was quite useful:
It flanked them out with ease, placed a few shots at their rear and maked them feel nervous over the entire battle!
It was disturbing the enemy, not really damaging him.
On the third engagement it was hit by a lucky Large Laser (on a 12!) and was shot to pieces!
There wasn´t much to salvage and i didn´t buy another one for my unit but it was fun!!

No denying ultra-lights are pure fun. However, they are fairly useless unless they go atleast 13/20, or they fall apart so easily. However, you can only get so much out of level 2 and below when it comes to ultra lights (No XL gyros, compact cockpits, or (rarely) XXL engines).

I think Ultralights are just to fragile anyway to put them in a real fight. There maybe some niches where these are usefull (like fun-gaming !).
Shure, I´ve constructed 10 or 15ton speedmonsters with level 2/3 tech on my own but I think they will never be used by forces of the IS. Even for my regiment this things are to expensive for what they offer.
I mostly use light hovers or VTOL´s for this kind of job.
