Can warships enter atmosphere if they detached their sail or have a fusion charged KF drive?
If so, can they land?
(Out of curiosity)

From the books, I'd say no. But that's not quite an official rule.
I do know that you wouldn't have to detach your sail or be without one. A jump sail is and always has been retractable.

Depends on the books...there is mention in several of the source books about warships crash landing after taking termendous battle damage...so while not landing in the sense of it's in one peice it can still make contact with the ground.
And yes I know they didn't mention anything of the Davion warship that blew up over, crap the planet's name escapes me right this minute, but it's logical (yes I know we are talking about BT) to assume that the parts of the ship fell to the planet and no not all of them are going to burn up. I chuck that up to lack of detail on the authors part. The whole not worrying about the aftermath of a battle if it doesn't effect the main characters levels hundreds of things unaccounted for and open to all kinds of theories etc...

According to Battle Space Warships cannot enter atmosphere.
Further, Warships, having no aerodynamic shape can enter atmosphere in much the same way big hunks of rocks can land (as shown in Armagedon and Deep Impact, but hopefully without the corniness... oh wait. Its BT )
Though I bet a lot of it would burn up. Once the hull goes, the inside would probably burn up pretty fast.

A warship might (MIGHT) be able to enter the upper Thermosphere (let's say 600+ KiloMeters above the planet, assuming the atmosphere is approximating Earth's). Any lower and the station-keeping drives would likely not generate enough thrust to stay aloft (requiring use of the main thrusters for powered flight), and the ship would probably fall like the rock Raven! mentioned (albeit, a rock able to semi-control its own decent).

AT 2: JumpShips and WarShips cannot enter the space/atmosphere interface.
(up to 107 km above the surface)

Who's to say you can't make a house rule?
Take Star Wars as an example, the old Victory-class Star Destroyers could act as (extremely large) drop ships.

That would actually be a really interesting. You could have it designed to act as a fortress for your forces once it lands, giving you an instant foothold.
As for the planet, Karagin, I believe you're thinking of Kathil in the novel Flashpoint.

Okay so the rules say it can't happen...BUT the fiction and the sourcebooks that written as if we are reading accounts past events say it has happen on several occasions.
We have a lot of examples of the rules of the games making hash of the fiction as written by the authors.
Personally I think it can happen, everything from chuncks fo the ships ranging in size from trash cans to city blocks to a whole ship, it's up to what you want to believe is possible.
The rules are there so some munchkin doesn't try to crash a McKenna into Terra to take out the WoB or some other assaine event on the same level. Like a lot of things in Sci-fi, it depends on what level you are willing to go with for the events and hard points of the universe you are playing in.

Thanks, I think that is it...I remember a similar thread as this one I and I believe Cadet point out that parts of the ship would have hit the planet causing major damage to the planet it self, but as was stated then, that kind of stuff isn't important...so I guess it's up to you and your group to decidced how detailed you want your game to be.

BT Warships were never designed for launching from a planetary surface, and that might be the real problem. Even if you get down in one piece you're not getting back up. The structure isn't built for that type of punishment, the engines don't have the power and you have nothing resembling landing gear in any case.

But be carefull! A Warship that lands and sends out a regiment of mechs (or even more) would be a problem for game-balance.
Such a behemoth would secure it´s landing site with it´s mammoth weapons much easier than a horde of dropships and the enemy will have to have some real serious anti-warship bunkers or another warship to be a threat to you!

Actually, I think its rather hard to hit something with capital weapons when your landed (Not ment to target small things and your range is somewhat limited). Standard weapons would do fine.
