I got to wondering: why do all the long-range weapons weigh so much?
AC/2: 24-hex range, 6 tons (+ammo)
AC/5: 18-hex range, 8 tons (+ammo)
PPC: 18-hex range, 7 tons (+heat sinks)
So, I decided to make a low-weight, low-damage weapon. The advantage of long range would be countered by a high firing heat and a disproportionate critical space cost.
Weapon: Beam Cannon (the best name I could come up with. Am looking for a better one)
Type: Energy
Rules Level/Era: 2/have not decided on a year
Heat: 6 points
Damage: 2 points
Mass/Crits: 3 tons/3 slots
Range: 6/12/18
Weapon Cost: 200,000/unit
Weapon BV: 46
Weapon Value: 27
Comments/criticism?

I want to like it. But for some reason I am having troubles with it. I guess I want slightly better damage and range. The heat is ok, mabey increase the heat to 8, and up the damage to 3 or 4. I like the weight and the crit space. For some reason I am thinking it needs to be 22 to 26 for total range. Not sure if that is going to un balance it though.
So something like this.
Name: Beam Cannon
Range: 8-16-24 (min 4)
Damage: 4
Weight: 3 or (4.5)
Crits: 3

This weapon eases construction of snipers. Mechs can use three of these easily = ranged crit seeker.

Yes; that's a great idea. I've always thought that there should be an energy equivalent of the AC/2. And this does that extremely well.
No min range?

I decided on a range profile similar to the LRM but, since there were no missiles to arm, I decided against the minimum range.

What do you think of this?
I tried for better heat dissipation, but I just didn't have the crits for it. I know that Maulers usually have an XL engine, but they really don't deserve XLs. And I didnt have the crits for that either. I decided to use the Mauler because it's the first 'Mech that came to mind which packs a number of AC/2s. I might try a JagerMech next. And I just thought of the Blackjack while typing this, so maybe one of those, too.
I think that the heat and the three tons/crits were good decisions. It makes the beam cannons hard to pack in in numbers too large for decency. And the crits help balance the light weight, bringing it more in line with the AC/2. I like this weapon. Expect vehicles shortly.

A perfect example of why I created the weapon.
Next issue: we need a better name...

How about Compact Laser Cannon.
Or Night Ranger Laser System.
BattleMech Technical Readout

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The new Stinger GR seriers is a mech that mounts a new weapon system called
the Compact Laser Cannon (CLC for Short). And a new targeting system called
Night Ranger T-A-G (Target Aquisition Gear). The new Stinger STG-D7-GR is now
considered a recon/hunter unit, and the exact nature of the mech has been
shrouded in secresey. What we hve been able to find out is speculation at
best.
==Capabilities:==
The Ghost Recon vriant of the Stinger is a heavy electronics light mech that
carries new weapon system called the Compact Laser Cannon. The new weapon is
intended to enguage targets at long range and inflict damage with out ammo
concerns. The GR variant also mounts a Null signature system to help protect
it from detection. The Night Ranger T-A-G unit is a interesting take on the
Targeting computer. It can only be weapon mounted to arm mounted weapons and
can only give a decent target acuisition when the unit is at full stop.
(Game terms. Give a -2 when the unit is immobile for a full round. But can
also act as a observation and recording unit for scouting and reconnance
purposes. Affected by standard ECM)

What about light PPC?
Quite similar to gauss - light gauss
less damage, more range, similar heat (aehm, gauss and heat, ...), lighter and smaller.
This would also explain adding min. range.

Light PPC actually sounds like a good name.
Finally, a light weight long ranged gun...
What will the clan techs do to munch it up?

Honestly, I like "beam cannon." Only the artillery guns have names like "sniper." The rest are called "laser" and "missile," with additions designating type. They simply call it "particle projection cannon;" I think beam cannon works just as well here. "Sniper" might be a good manufacturer's name/brand name, but I think that's it.
I'd go with light PPC, but everyone does a light PPC. Beam cannon is a little more original, I think.
Edit:
Still, it's not my creation. So let us know what you go with, Warhammer.
