Lack of back-up weapons on this Catapult would relegate it to support duties in any unit. But no such luck here. Carrying double the ammo reserves for it's LRM's, it must try to keep the Crusader's pilot at a distance. Here's the trick. Try to stay near your minimum. The Crusader would be hard pressed to get a hit off with it's short range weapons at a distance of 6-9 hexes. Which is short to medium range for the LRM's. Both mechs need to keep in motion. The Catapult to keep the distance at it's optimum and the Crusader to keep within the minimum range of the LRM's. It, as usual, comes down to initiative and lucky dice rolls. |

I'd like to fight you some day, if that is your normal tactics.
If I am the Crusader pilot, I stay at long range until I get bored, running to keep my modifier up so that neither of us hits with any (or hardly any LRMs). Any round I am planning on firing at you, I will walk directly toward you if I can close to medium range (the only time I fire is if I get you to medium range with no more than a +3 modifier.
I make sure to use up all my LRMs relatively quickly, then charge your ass. To keep your distance, you will have to jump, and your to-hit numbers get all screwed up by that, more than my targetting numbers. If you are jumping, you are not going to hit me with very many missles, and you will run out fairly quickly.
Since LRMs sandpaper the armor off, you have to hit me alot to remove any significant amount of armor, and once you run out of missles, the CRU wins.
By the way, I HATE Crusaders, and really like the C1 Catapult, but this battle won't fly.

CRD-3R Crusader versus CPLT-A1 Catapult.
Both are 65 tons, both mount long and short range weapons packages. One is more mobile while the other mounts more close in weapons.

Cain and I are going to play this one in megamek in a minute to see which we prefer.
He won the flip, so he gets the catapult. _________________ too lazy to make a sig...

I thought I quoted the thunder portion of your first post....using thunder won't add anything to the Cat's chances.

I already tested it both ways against the 'bot. The Catapult got slaughtered both times.
The 'bot wasn't even close to doing anything against me when it handled the Cat. It just sandpapered my armor while I got rid of all my LRM ammo and moved closer for the kill.
My turn with the Cat looked better, I even managed to get internal hits on the Crusader. Unfortunately no criticals on his leg. My loss was assured when my pilot blacked out after four head hits. Those SRMs are real killers.

That would depend on terrain, but on normal map I agree that it wouldn't be much useful.
And you quoted whole post

Yes, and I meant to quote only the thunder portion as that was the part I was commenting on.

Crusader because if it gets in close or just outlasts the Catapult's ammo supply the fight is over.
