Having spent my Battletech career avoiding AP pods whenever possible, I felt they could use a little upgrading. Not only are they single-shot, but they do so little damage: even filling both legs with AP pods won't completely kill a single swarming platoon! I especially think the Clans mounting them on frontline omnis is odd; one hardly ever sees unarmored infantry in Clan battles. Even IS infantry don't swarm often, and rarely would you face only a single platoon.
I was thinking that a series of laser splitters mounted around the legs might give an omnidirectional (low damage) spread that could kill infantry without damging the mech's own legs.
How about:
Laser Anti-Personnel Pod
weight: 0.5 ton
heat: 1
crits: 1
damage: 1d6 to unarmored infantry in same hex; or half damage to Battle Armor.
The pods can be reused just like any other laser weapon.
If it seems a bit unbalanced, how about if the Laser AP pod stands a chance of doing half damage to the firing mech's legs (say 4 or lower on 2d6)?
Any thoughts?

What about converting laser AMS to do this work? If it already can be used to track missiles and also used as weapon (MaxTech rules) than it may serve in this role as well (standard AMS would do the same too of course).
If I understand the rules correctly than A-Pods can be used against infantry moving around mech's body, so you probably need automatic targeting (AMS would do that). Other weapons can't be used to fire on units on your hex (swarmers).
The reason for clans to mount A-Pods avoids me. They are useless against BAs.
Maybe another technical solution would be using the same principle as mech flamer - directing plasma from engine through small jets placed around the mech, but that would generate more heat (5, like hitting yourself with flamer?). The effects would be like standing in fire hex (roll 8+ or die, BA again unaffected).

How about giant circular saws that extend on arms from the 'mech's lower leg
