How much do you think individual regiments might have customized their machines. It is typical to arrange variants by house, but I think that the Night Stalkers and the Sword of Light might want to do very different things with their Phoenix Hawks (see the variant I posted for the Stalkers). Or how the Skye Rangers would view the Commando as opposed to the Stealthy Tigers? Just kind of an odd idea, and a good way to increase the variance between different regiments...probably better than the rather broken field manual rules.

It's quite possible that each regiment may field slightly different variant of the same mech, especially in succession wars era, when materiel wasn't available everywhere due to general technology level degradation and logistics problem with dwindling numbers of transporters.
I can imagine that around 3055 this practice would be officially discouraged, because the production of spare parts should be able to keep up with with losses and each state would want to keep standard equipment to ensure that each unit will be able to do what is expected. The exceptions to this practice would be the mechs of mercenary units, periphery and elite regiments that want to catch their opponents off guard.
Another good time for regiment specific units would be FedCom Civil war.
