Mom is thinking about putting a garden in the back yard.
Problem is, the local terrain isn't very good. We have 3-18 inches of poor topsoil, then it's solid clay beneath that.
Can anyone think of some plants that would be good for the terrain? I was thinking legumes, but I'm not sure.
Thanks.

Lantanas can live through anything and thrive in desert crap soil and direct sun. Mexican Morning Glories are a little more sensitive than lantanas but I personally think they are much more pleasing.
If you are looking for herbs, purple coneflower (also known as echinacea purpurea) will take a bit of extra work the first year but hardly any after than and will give very pretty, fragrant purple flowers simmilar to a black-eyed susan. Mint and basil can grow in just about any situation, but can sometimes grow so well they are as bad as weeds (mint more so because it sends parasitic runners through the ground if you let it).
Roses require a shady spot and little extra work the first year, but will actually make great desert plants after that as long as you don't chose a hybrid or white rose. Full size bushes grow better than minis.
