We had a similar case here in germany about 3 years ago! A BMW driver trusted his nav that showed a bridge ahaed but it was a ferrypoint! So his car leaped into the river!
He saw the warning signs but he followed stupidly that nav-command to drive straight on!

Im from the Uk, and i have to say this is quite true (even if a bit satirical).

It seems we have a new generation of neo-cool middle aged guys who buy the latest gadgets for their cars. GPS being one of them.

Apart from the fact that most satnavs in cars are awful. These guys insist on using them because,
A they spent the money on them
B it means less thinking on their part!

One great example was some guy planned a route between Leeds and Devon (300miles roughly) and avoiding Birmingham (bad traffic).

The planner came up with a 2000 mile route that sent him through Wales, onto a ferry to Belfast, down through Ireland to the south coast. On another ferry to France, through most of France to Calais and another Ferry to Plymouth!!!

Something similar was shown on the TV a while back too. With roughly the same route.

Sometimes, you just have to say it.

And this is quite possibly why cars will never drive themselves.

Though I'm quite shocked that satnavs are so bad. I've never had a problem with MapQuest, and even "Streets and Tips: 2002" is normally pretty good. The worst I've ever seen was both programs plotting a route from Lawrence Kansas to Springfield Missouri by way of I-44 when MO-13 is now faster.

But at least they didn't have me driving into the Rio Grande!

Lets just say some of the less official (aka cheap) versions are very glitchy! Most are ok, as usual its only the one or two mistakes that get the headlines rather than the millions of well planned routes that get calculated every day.

It is not that a nav can make the one or other mistake but that a driver follows them, ignoring all signs and that what his own eyes showed them!
My father has a nav too and he is satisfied even though it isn´t updated and tried to guide him wrong.
