Disclaimer: this is quite long and mostly features questions. Yes, it does also contain info, so if you are intrigued, ask away. I would appreciate it if you could find the patience to read all this!

Hi guys - my interest in BT is just about the same as it was before I last left this board: I'm stuck in all lvl1 territory (apart from those quick, fun Clan games). Seeing as I much prefer to game with existing designs, I have long started to search for old printed material; lvl1 designs aren't as numerous as the designs from 3050+, after all.

Taking a pointer from CBTList (Mechlist originally) this boiled down to tracking down 4 magazines: Battletechnology, StarDate (aka StarDrive), Tech Factory (aka Mech Factory) and Future Wars.

BT was no problem, though spanning 21+2 issues.

SD is more difficult. Though I am aiming mainly at 6+1 issues (Volume 3 and SDrive 1/1), they are difficult to find. I own SD 3/4 and 3/6 as well as SDrive 1/1 now. I do have some questions: does anyone have the other issues and is wanting to sell them to me? StarDate also had 11 (really 9) issues before that. In issue 5/6 they had an article by Weissman on "The History of BattleDroids". I have that issue. Question - were there any other BT-related articles in any other issue before volume 3?

Now, the two above were, at the time, considered official. Ask Karagin on their exact status, he knows this stuff. Only Battletechnology existed long enough for lvl2 equipment to make an appearance.

Two fanzines that also published lvl1 stuff were Tech Factory and Future Wars. Really, they are a mixed bag.

I have about half the issues of Tech Factory (total run of 13). Their designs are good, though some of them are redundant. I love the Deceiver and their Goliath variants. No artwork to speak of. Mostly very feeble fluff. Only barely useful.

I recently got my first issue of Future Wars. The actual publication is terrible - just a bunch of stapled sheets of paper. However, the fluff is much higher standard than in TF. And while lacking pictures on many designs, there is a decided effort to include decent pictures on important machines. (just a point of reference: SD had excellent illustrations for all designs, and so did all the early issues of BT - it became a mixed bag later on, as of issue 7, really) My question on this publication: can anyone tell me what the total run of this was? Is there a listing anywhere, somewhere to find out the content? Even though (or maybe because?) this publication has the lowest production value, it is by far the hardest one to find.

Not true. There was a British magazine called "Game Review" which spanned at least 5 issues and appeared in the late 80s. This magazine included at least two designs, the Archon and Tyrant, which were considered official material by Battletechnology and which have, in fact, been incorrectly attached to StarDate (see CBTList). Does ANYONE know ANYTHING about this publication?

Next on my agenda: Space Gamer. This general magazine was apparently used in the 80s for FASA to leak out experimental rules of various kinds. The MkI Omnis were apparently published in this one. Space Gamer 79 (only issue I own) included the specs for the Battledroid Cestus, written by Dale L. Kemper, who was, at the time, one of the premier TRO writers for FASA (he also designed most of the entries in the earlier issues of Battletechnology). One of the prior issues apparently also had some groundbreaking work on weapons system for the earlier Battledroid game. Does anyone have a list of the Space Gamer magazines that did feature something on Battletech?

This is getting long, no? Well, I'm almost done!

MechForce. Who can tell me about it? Surely a lot of you will have had something to do with MFNA. What publications did they offer? What was contained in them? How many issues did they publish? What was the quality like? But, really, what I'm after is info on MFUK - they did quite a few things with lvl1 (and, yes, quite a few things with lvl4 as well!!!). What did they release? Record sheets. How many? Was there ever any fluff for their designs? Was there a magazine? Any other publication, book, whatnot?

If any of you read through the whole of this, I thank you whole-heartedly. Any and all info that contributes to my knowledge of all of this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Nah, was an easy read. I just came into the game too late for all of that stuff.

The files for all the Tech/Mech Factory designs are available in HMPro.

HMPro also has some of the Future Wars designs.

Aye, but that don't answer all the questions about artwork/fluff in the zines and all that. But thanks for pointing it out, I had actually forgotten heh.
