This is a good point that cannot be over-made. Particularly on the Lvl. 1 mech, heat problems are often self-inflicted. People got too used to being able to shoot everything when they got double heat sinks and couldn't make the adjustment back to fire discipline.

He, he, don't tell me anything about DHSs and alpha strikes. Yesterday I was driving a Kodiak

I totally second everything that Pin has said.
I'd like to add some other great examples of 'mechs that will fry themselves on alpha-strikes, yet run perfectly cool when used with just basic common sense.
Mordel has named a great IS lvl2 example, the Penetrator.
My votes for the best examples in other tech levels would be:
lvl1: Stalker
Clan: Mad Dog/Vulture A
Notice how designs that are aimed at serving multiple range brackets end up with a comparatively low BV? At least with the old BV....

Because the formula lowers the BV of mechs that overheat when all the weapons are fired...

I always thought of the Stalker (3F) as an excellent example of a mech that requires heat discipline (it says it in the fluff!) trying an alpha in a Stalker is a very bad idea unless you out of ammo but it doesn't need to alpha its weapons are well grouped and by the time your desperate near the end of a battle your more then likely out of ammo and maybe even missing a few weapons this the time for an alpha late in the fight against wounded foes it can finish a mech at a crucial time

I don't really agree - after all, the weapons are so obviously grouped..... It simply has two options:
within 9 hexes, unload with medium lasers and SRMs (=20 heat - 20 heat sinks = 0) - the equation is really, really easy.
above 9 hexes, unload with large lasers and LRMs (=24 heat - 20 heat sinks = "magic" 4 heat).
Juggle slightly for movement, or for adding some long range weapons at closer range if the kill is real juicy.
Sorry, I think it is extremely easy to ride a Stalker without breaking sweat.
But yeah, it is a good example of a 'mech definitely *not* designed to alpha strike all over the place. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior
