Unit Background and History
Tukayyid
With the Wolf Clan smashing across Tukayyid, the embattled 278th and 10th Army needed whatever assistance they could get. The use of primarily energy weapons by Clan Wolf, and their well planned defense of their supply lines meant that they were walking nearly unharrassed against the ComGuards and smashing them despite well organized and well planned defensive actions.
Precentor Martial Focht was, of course, distressed. He decided to quickly assemble the 506th CGIR, ComGuards Infantry Regiment, and attached them to the 10th Army. Under the command of Colonel Jack Sink, the 506th went into combat against Clan Wolf and earned their nickname: the Wolfhounds.
Sink planned his initial deployment and attack around the innovative and seldom seen mass airdrop. Taking a page from history, Sink imagined a large air drop of troops and equipment right on top of Clan Wolf supply lines, with small squads inflicting damage where mechs and tanks could not go. However, air transport was limited. So Colonel Sink commondeared a large number of Gliders used by a recreational air club. The gliders, armored and code named Mules, would land their troops and equipment nearly on top of the Wolfs and then the Infantry could hop out and attack quickly, then fade away before Clan Wolf could retaliate.
It was a brilliant plan, but its very concept would prove to be its undoing. The Gliders were untested and the pilots from the ComGuards had never flown them before. Although taking off proved to be fairly easy, using converted Guardian fighters, the landings would prove disasterous.
The first wave of Gliders, carrying A and B Company against 2nd Line units of Clan Wolf came down to early. Without engines, the units were unable to gain height and their vain attempts only made the Gliders bounce right to the feet of the Mechs and Elementals guarding the supply depot. The Clanners were so ammazed and shocked by what they saw that they were unable to respond for a minute to the stunned infantry inside. This saved the lives of many men as when the Infantry got out and started to open fire they were able to confuse the mechs so much that they retreated back to the depot rather then engage. A and B company were then able to fade off into the woods without any more enemy contact.
This was the story for many of the glider born companies. Only E Company was able to inflict damage against Clan Wolf. Their Gliders overshot their target DZ, and came down instead behind their target Depot. Leaving their gliders at a dead run, the men of E Company were able to quickly set up their mortars and machine guns. Setting down a base of fire the Mortar crews were able to move up to a safe distance and lay down heavy fire. The resulting explosions of munitions covered their escape and made the guards have to go around the now deadly depot.
The 506th stayed in the field for the full 21 days of combat on Tukkayid. Harrassing Clan Wolf for that full time. Although their contribution would ultimitaly prove fuitile, the idea caught much attention both in the Clans and in the Inner Sphere. It is believed that the Slyph battle armor was a development of this use of airborn troops.
The Wolfhounds took 48% casualties in their babtism by fire. In an ironic twist, Colonel Sink, whose idea it was to create the first Airborn unit of the ComGuards, died in a glider accident. His glider came down in to short of a field and crashed into heavy woods. He was killed instantly.
After Tukkayid
With the death of Colonel Sink and their withdrawel from Tukkayid the 506th was sent to Terra to regroup, train and reequip. The idea of an airborn was exciting to the GomGuards and they wanted to see just how well the idea could work in practice. Sending the 506th to Africa, they began to pratice in the deserts, slowly building up skills to become a parachute regiment.
During this time their airsupport company was added for air strikes against enemy position and a light armor company was also added to support infantry movements against strengthened positions. Major Alexander Mygil was named commander, a reward for his successful commands of E and D companies against Clan Wolf. The training in the deserts of Northern Africa was intense and hardened the unit to an elite. The casualties were replaced strictly by volunteer and Major Mygil requested and recieved many tried and true VTOL designs to use for combat drops rather then the dangerous Mule Gliders, which have been broken down for scrap metal, except for a few left over for dare devil parachutists.
With a full stregnth regiment with artillery, armor, and air support, the 506th considered itself ready for anything. Needless to say they were sorely disappointed when they recieved orders to stay and guard North Africa and a vagualy known, and definitly unimportant supply depot in the middle of the saharra desert.
It would be this fateful order which would change the lives of every man in the 506th and Major Mygil specifically.
Word of Blake and the Terran Invasion
When Word of Blake decended on Terra, it came as a complete suprise to Major Mygil. Incensed at these betrayers he ordered his unit to combat rediness and waited for the order to attack. However, the Word of Blake struke quickly and completely disabled ComGuard command on Earth. Thinking quickly Mygil decided to fade off into the African wilderness which he had learned so much about as he stayed here training. He began to set up an insurgant war against the Word of Blake.
Using Guardians and VTOLs Mygil has staged numerous hit and run raids against the Word of Blake. He has suffered minimal losses, and strikes at night, using the hard to spot Boomerang spy planes to locate isolated and vulnerable targets. Because of his careful and cunning successes in the desert, he has become known as the Desert Wolf to the population of Terra, a sort of outlaw figure resisting the vile Word of Blake oppressors.
However after five years of such isolated engagements, Mygil has realized that it is time for the Word of Blake to be stopped and kicked fully out of the Terran system. Taking his best squad, they infiltrated a Word of Blake Militia transport and left Terra for Solaris 7, hoping to regain contact with the ComGuards and find mercenaries or recruits to replace his losses. After reestablishing contact, the ComGuards ended up joining the newly formed Star League.
Mygil has tried to convince the Star League high command to save his unit, but with the issue of the Clans before it, the Star League has not been a willing ear. Finally Mygil said he would save his unit himself, and turning down command offers left the Star League HQ and headed back to Solaris 7. He is hoping to find mercenaries willing to fight for lostech that will come back with him to Africa to help him save his unit and pull them out of the Terran system rather then stay and fight, and slowly die, to the Word of Blake.

Part of your problem is that you are too high from the battlefield to see whats really going on. The proper place of mechs is with feet and knees blown by land mines and satchel charges. Thats when you see where Mechs really belong.

I like em. Even though I'm a tanker with a severe fear of heights, I've always liked the Jumpers. I like em so much, in fact, that I have a Battalion of em in my Merc unit.

I am starting to like groundpounders and vehicles. Hell's Horses tends to feild alot of them. And as I learn more about it. They can be quite effective.

A few platoons of SRM infantry with Heavy Armor sound about right for defensive duty.
Just hide them in some heavy woods.
