Okay another year of fun with the sand, sun, flies and other not so nice things is coming to an end.
Needless to say this deployment wasn't one that I can say I will look back on in any kind of fond memories. It has been nothing but one screw up after another.
We have Hollywood officers trying really hard to refight Vietnam in that they don't screw things up and guess what, they are screwing things up. They worry about things like soliders wareing flip flops from their living unit to the shower units, the walk is all of 25 to 30 feet, not very far and you don't leave the area. Yet they complain daily about folks not wearing shoes or boots, walking across gravel or concrete.
The best one is this, the Army has spent several million dollars building a special HMMVEE that simulates what happens when the blast vehicle rolls over and then what to do. So instead of teaching folks HOW TO AVOID THE ROLL OVER THROUGH BETTER DRIVING, they teach folks how to have roll overs. Noting here that while sitting through a class on what to do, I point out wouldn't it be better if we got better drivers training versus learning about how to have roll over, let's just say the Sergeant Major wasn't impressed with my attitude.
Then we are in a war zone, and the officers and commanders are worried about things like walking on the grass, hello this is semi-arid country grass is not something that is there, or if we are out past 12am or if we have the proper amount of extreme cold weather gear etc...yet when it comes to getting the proper equipment for the vehicles or the correct weapons, ie M4 Carbines for drivers vs. M16s or 9mms for the drivers, they claim they can't get us the stuff cause it's not there, but every REMF and officer seems to have an M4 or 9mm and these jokers never leave the FOBs.
The war has gone from one of activly trying to stop the insurgents to one of garrasion duty. Sure there are still attacks by the insurgents and sure some units are still fighting them, but they are expection rather then the rule. There are more rules on what we can say or do then there are back home on any post in the states.
So I can't wait to get home and be done with the deployment.
I am sorry if I sound very negative, but the leadership around here hasn't impressed me nor have they shown anything for the troops to respect or be loyal to.
Oh only a couple of more weeks of this place and then it's home.

Wow. I can't think of much to say to that other than good luck, and enjoy the trip home when it comes.

Sounds funny, but as the report from reality it's sad. I hope that you'll find some happiness and well deserved rest home.

That sums up a lot of my time in the sand box. Most leaders were worried about PC and not screwing up their carrers, then again I wasn't on the firing line, but tied to a runway.
Think on the brightside, would you rather humor the idiots on base stuck in garrison, or be out patrolling? Hang in there, then collect the college and other perks when you get home!
