Here we go again! Still been tinkering with the idea of the Heartbreaker, even though I couldn't make it work like I originally hoped. Well, I got a new version up which I think surpasses the original in most respects. But of course, I need to give credit where credit is due. Thanks to Vagabond specifically for the idea of using the LB 20-X. Thanks in general terms to everyone else who simply commented on the original design and kept me thinking about it. So, here it is!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
A design on the drawing board of the Federated Suns since the middle
stages of the Civil War, the Heartbreaker was a marvel of a concept with just
one problem: it couldn't be made to work reliably. Although it's targetting
systems and weaponry were top of the line for Federated technology, the design
itself always seemed to be overshadowed by its specialized nature. Years
later, with continued thawing of the relations between the Lyran Commonwealth
and the Federated Suns, several engineers from Norse-Storm Technologies, noted
for their assault designs, stumbled across the old test footage and schematics
of the Heartbreaker.

A flurry of messages flew back and forth between the two nations, and
eventually, an accord was reached: the Lyran engineers would help in the
design and armament of the machine and the Federated Suns would donate their
previous research, money and their own technicians. The result would be a
variant of the Cyclops known as the HB model in recognition of the design's
origin.

==Capabilities:==
One of the main issues with the Heartbreaker was how to have it keep up
with its prey, while still being less vulnerable than them. The Federated
engineers had worked hard on this, but had come to no solid conclusions,
usually insiting on ultra heavy armor to the exclusion of speed. The Lyran
delegates realized that for a design that would be fighting other machines on
uneven footing or not at all, armor was a secondary concern. They pointed out
the vaunted Cyclops assault 'Mech as an example. To which the Federated
engineers could only slap themselves for not having noted the similarities
sooner.

With a new starting point to work from, the job was made much easier. A
new 'Mech was not necessary, only a new variant of an old and no longer
manufactured one. Though aquiring the rights to produce the design was
problematic (as no one knew who they actually belonged to now), it was
eventually done. The machine would have the same power curve from its power
plant as the original, and the main gun would be similar, but upgraded to the
new Defiance Disintergrator model.

The remaining weaponry has largely been dropped in favor of new weapons.
For long range punch, the machine carries a Johnston High Speed ER PPC. For
closer ranges, there are two new BlazeFire Longshot ER medium lasers. All of
the weapons are slaved to a targetting computer buried opposite the 'Mechs
autocannon, and wired into the other specialized electronics of the machine.

After much argument among the Federated and Lyran delegates, the
decision was finally made to mount a Light engine and jump jets. The Federated
delegation argued against for both cost and vulnerability reasons. The Lyrans
argued for it because of the extra mobility the jump jets would allow the
design. Finally, additional armor plating was added, though the machine
remains subpar on armor loadout.

An interesting note is that the machine now lacks hand actuators due to
the dificulties of wiring all the appropriate connections for systems in the
limited space availible. This has been deemed a minor problem, and there is no
currently planned corrective action going to be taken.

==Variants:==
One variant seen occasionally because of pilot preference is the
replacement of the ER PPC for a large pulse laser. The laser gives even more
accurate and devastating fire with less heat buildup, but sacrifices the
Cyclops' only long range weapon, so pilots are advised to think carefully
before switching the weapons out.

Another variant, rarely produced at the factory but seen often as a field
refit kit is the CP-12-HB. This variant keeps the standard engine and hands,
but has no jump capability. It is more common in Federated space, though many
units capable of getting their hands on the parts think it a worthwhile
upgrade to the venerable close assault Cyclops.

Also seen occasionally in Federated space is a variant with a standard
autocannon to take advantage of the specialized munitions availible. Again,
pilots are cautioned to weigh the risks and benefits carefully be swapping out
the weapon.

==Deployment==
The Cyclops is being produced slowly, as it is still an untested design.
Where the design is sent is also a very careful decision. The basis for the
Heartbreaker's limited success as a prototype was the fragility of Inner
Sphere XL engines specifically. For this reason, the machine is deemed
ill-suited for battling clan opponents.
