What kind of style of BattleTech do you normally play?
RPG- Means MWII or MWIII (or whatever they will call it) in which you create a full character and actually use some other than Mech skills every so often
Table Top- you may have a character but really just a name and some stats in a Mech you drive
AWAD- Click a Mech meets neither criteria

Tabletop pretty much anymore. I used to get into the RPG side a lot and used mech combat infrequently. But as my gaming group grew up and moved away the only btech guys I know in my area are only into it to blow the scrap outta mechs and tanks with mechs and tanks. So my MW books have remained unused in quite some time except for a few tables in them I still use. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Came to BTech by way of Mechwarrior. Generally play RPGs more than pure strategy games anyway. Actually, when playing Mechwarrior, B-Tech is a bit of a pain since a B-Tech battle takes longer than a Mechwarrior session normally does. (we block out 3-hours for a Mechwarrior interaction, but up to 6 hours for B-Tech).
Megamek has cut this down remarkable, and also made it easier to play Mechwarrior via IM or webphone.

Both. Though with MW3 rules a character is (even a veteran) horrible, I have created a character that, though clasified as a vet, has a 5G 6P. And that is what has added length to our games. I think we actually had a game end as a draw because everyone was out of ammo and had no way to really kill anything any more. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". This is why I never adopted MW3. I still use older MW2. Simpler and faster. There is too much similarity in the characters in MW2 but you can work around it. My favorite is to tell them 6 in REF or 6 in INT, not both, at creation. Also did a little fiddling with the advantages to give some differences to the characters.
I do RPG because players become a little more attached and less liking just to drive their Mechs into bad situations and see of they get lucky. Or sacrifice the pawn routine. Also it allows me to do a lot more out of Mech stuff and actually do more politics, company store, and the other stuff Mercs get hung up on.
AWAD- Gotta love a PC who thinks he is a loyal Davion subject but fallen for a comstar plot that preyed on his patriotism.

MW is faster than Btech. But 6 Hours? I can ususally get 3 lance v lance engagements in that time. If prepared and all that. Company V Company does take a lot longer.
That is when MegaMek comes in nicely but then you have to play with strict rules. I have tweaked them so to make the play more balanced and fun. But at the same time seems not part of the game.
One thing I try and do to speed it up is each encounter has some set of objective or rules. I make a quick scenario so the players know what is going on before we sit down. Stops that 20 minutes of strategy planning. Yes it may be too much advance warning, they still have to see the actual setup also, but speeds it all up generally.
AWAD- If I am playing this game it is face to face. IM/Webphone/ All that just does not sit well with me. Plus my wife will kill me.

Here's how it takes six hours:
Four players and a GM. Maps larger than 2x2. Set-up, take down (an hour by itself), the usual round-the-table chatter, no real ability to stop a B-Tech round in the middle, blind-rules (I don't place the enemies on the map until the players spot them or pick them up on sensors), varied enemies ranging from a lance of mechs to several companies of infantry with tank support.
And if there's going to be any roleplaying, that adds time too.
And since it is very hard, absent MM, to just hop in your mechs and go, B-Tech scenes have to be coordinated to last whole sessions by themselves and line up perfectly (or at least closely) with the end of previous sessions.
I do my part fairly quickly. But the players have to talk out their strategies, coordinate movement, and I let them.
