The last contest I had brought out some pretty good designs, so I thought I'd give you all another one.

The criteria is to design a true Mercenary's Mech. It needs to be reasonably fast (4/6 minimum for 70 ton+ designs, 5/8 for 65 tons to 40 tons, or 6/9 for anything lower).
Cost is a MAJOR issue.
Durability is also an important selling factor here.
Any tech level, IS tech only.
Firepower should cover as many ranges as is practical.
And once again, fluff helps but isn't required.


I'd also like to see how you arrived at the final design you did. It won't affect the scoring, but I think it would be nice to see how some other 'mech designers think.

==Overview:==
   The best buy for your money. The Landsknecht is a product of Lyran industry
for various mercenary units under contract with house Stainer, but thanks to
nomadic nature of mercenaries this 'Mech is getting widespread around the
Inner Sphere. First Landsknecht's were built from scrapped Griffins, but
Wolverines or Shadow Hawks are also getting common these days.

==Capabilities:==
   The Landsknecht is a true workhorse. With standard components used on
chassis the maintenance is relatively easy, substainial armor offers good
protection and the fact that the Landsknecht keeps the Jump Jets from it's
previous life only increases the value of the 'Mech to people who need to be
ready for any situation any time and CASE system allows the 'Mech to survive
terrible damage from ammo explosion and remain operational.
   The armament consists of a Large ER laser backed by medium laser trio for
short range work and LRM launcher for ranged fight and two machine guns round
up the armament. This weapon's mix should allow the Landsknecht to performwell
in any situation you throw it in. With experienced pilot the 'Mech can work
marvels, but at least basic heat management skill is required to allow the
pilot to survive. All these weapons are relatively easy to obtain, which
further increases the value of this machine.

==Variants:==
   Due to the nature of this 'Mech there are several variants of the basic
chassis, but they are far less popular. The most radical ones remove the Jump
Jets and replace the large laser with PPC and some additional armor.

==Deployment==
   The Landsknecht can be found almost anywhere, but majority still remains in
Lyran Space.

Those are the words of VEST's marketing campaign for this frightening new
version of the Sasquatch, which appears to be the final market product. A
fearsome array of 11 medium lasers forms the new core of this mech's weaponry,
with one firing to the rear. Anyone who gets close will more than likely get
shredded; the mounting of an ECM allows this unit the ability to do so.

The Gauss Rifle remains to hammer targets at range, as does the AMS to block
incoming fire. The machine guns are still there to sweep away infantry. But
the addition of a BAP makes this that much easier.

==Overview:==
While originally intended as an arena mech, the losses all Houses have
sustained over the course of the last few conflicts have resulted in even
arena mechs being pressed into service.

In the case of the Daedalus, the decision was made to use this as a fire
support mech capable of getting in and out of conflict at high speed.

A major flaw noted was that the jump jets were not mounted evenly and that
this caused trouble with balance in flight. The jets were re-positioned to
help solve this problem, but created the additional problem of what to do with
the displaced SRM 6. The decision was made to trade it out for an LRM 5 and
mount it in the center torso where the SRM 6 had once been; this, coupled with
the RL 10, this gave the Daedalus some much-needed long-range punch.

The decision was also made to change up the energy weapons. The large pulse
laser and small laser were deleted. In their place, the decision was made to
mount a standard large laser, an ECM suite to protect the mech, and some
additional armor. 

==Variants:==
The 2B variant makes use of a BAP instead of the ECM; this version functions
more along the lines of a hunter-killer instead of a true fire support unit.

The 2C variant has a C3 Slave and mounts an additional RL-10. The 2CA uses a
TAG instead of the C3 Slave.

Luthien Armor Works designed the Incubus to replace the aging DRG-1N Dragon in
3019.
The DCMS adhered rigidly to their fleet of Dragons nonetheless and even after
almost being forced to review the design they declared to favor a redesigned
Dragon instead!
Eventually this statements led to the now famous PPC-wielding Grand Dragon!

Interest in the Incubus came  from a unsuspected quarter: Some of the few
mercenaries in employment of the DC approached the Luthien Armor Works and a
limited production run of the mech was sold to them to get some of the
investment back!

==Capabilities:==
In speed and armor similar to the Dragon the Incubus tried another
weaponloadout.
Its firepower centers around a large laser which delivers a harder punch as
the AC/5 of the Dragon without any ammo dependence though for a somewhat
reduced range. At long range two LRM-5 launchers keep the enemy busy. They are
located in shock proofed housings in the forearms to counter the impact of a
punch. For short range combat the main weapon is supported by a medium laser
and a SRM-6 (a potent crit seeker).


==Variants:==
The production run was to short to justify any factory variant but over the
years the mercenary-owners modified some of their machines in different ways.

==Deployment==
No machine was taken over by the DCMS but quite a lot were (and are) in
service of small to medium sized mercenary units.
Some Incubus even ended up in the hands of some minor periphery militias.

Hmm, I dislike the LRM splitting trick, but otherwise the 'Mech looks fine.

I splitted the LRM because while designing this mech I had two LRM's in "punching housings" (like the LRM-15 of the well known Zeus) before my eyes, even though I didn't mention a higher damage per punch in the fluff.
Otherwise I don't tend to split LRM`s into LRM-5`s just to get one additional ton (unless for reasons of look!). Exclamation

It's a bit of a necessary evil.

For all three, the mech wouldn't have enough available tonnage. The Sasquatch wouldn't be able to have its array of mediums, and the other two wouldn't be as fast.

Yes, that's obvious, but I wonder if the Mecs are buying these things... maybe that I just forget about the fact that they now have their own pseudo-state with Munchkin Dragoons in charge... Laughing
