OK here is my first idea for a design challenge and it might just be a good one (IMHO) Shocked

So this is the premise. is there one thing you can do to a Mech to vastly improve its potential ie one small thing that makes all the difference

Guidelines:
No major refits change one thing only i.e. swap to FF armour or trade a AC5 for a PPC and Heat sinks u can trade a large weapon for a Couple or trio of smaller ones. also no changing to Double heat sinks unless you can explain why.

It needs to improve the design ie make it tougher, more Dangerous, or useful to the lance.

one submission each so don`t rush in with the first one you can get done up.

Also only mechs from the 3067 era as seen here in Mordel`s tro

NEEDS fluff why was this done. was the Gauss blow off and all u had where Large lasers? is it a merc with out a definite supply of pricey RAC ammo?

Again NEEDS fluff so it would be great to see a large turn out if possible and it will be open for at least 2 weeks so make it good Smile there will be a 1st 2nd and 3rd as well as best fluff category

Remember keep it simple

==Overview:==
     The BLF-22 Blue Flame is a field refit used by Blake's Peace, an indeendet level II assigned as a special operations unit to 8th division of WoB militia, alhough the unit was spotted on several occassions far away from it's home. The Peace was specially trained in crowd control duties, using special SRM munitions to neutralize large masses of civilians from safe distance with foam warheads or nets and intuitively navigating city streets with ease.
     Everything changed with the start of Jihad. Blake's Peace saw extensive use in it's intended role, but occassionally the unit was sent to purify entire blocks of houses from infidels. Using inferno and fragmentation missiles the Peace became quickly known for being able to kill everything in city block in under 30 seconds. Thousands of innocent civilians fell to Peace's lightning raids against foreign agents, real or imagined. The unit found it's end in the hands of FedCom militia unit on nameless periphery world. The desperate soldiers made their last stand against the Blakists on the field that actually housed an underground fuel tank. Blake's Peace died by the very flames they used as their main weapon.
     Blake's Peace 'Mechs and vehicles were modified to carry increased amount of SRM ammo to allow them to utilize wide choice of available ammunitions.

Ok. One change only? what do you mean? you give a few examples but it leaves me pondering. can i drop a weapon for a lighter piece and add heat sinks AND armor?

When you say one change, do you mean like alter one present item and then use its effect to better the unit?

ie: Fusion to XL and use extra weight to add sinks, armor, and weapons.
ie 2: Standard to Endosteel and use saving to beef up weapons.

so on and so forth?

it is a bit fuzzy but the point is to keep the change as small as possible a engine or internal structure change will lead to a much larger change/s as in multiple weapon systems. try and limit it to 1 to 3 systems

Try to keep it small though think of things that don't need a factory to change. Along the lines of field refits with only the available tech on hand

Nice SD first i but it could be a while before there's any deciding done though i like the Change a straight swap in weapon systems with a ammo in crease still improves the units versatility. Nice.

Maybe that I'll try to upgrade the fluff... maybe... I have a lot of time to wait. The best thing is alternative ammo access. I dislike using small streak racks.

And Rudel, The Blue Flame may have many variants... especially with new thingies around ... MML anyone?

Nevertheless i've choosen another 3067 mech so here you are:
Code:

               BattleMech Technical Readout

Type/Model:    Stiletto STO-5A
Tech:          Inner Sphere / 3062
Config:        Biped BattleMech
Rules:         Level 2, Modified design

Mass:          35 tons
Chassis:       MatherTech 750 Endo Steel
Power Plant:   280 VOX Light Fusion
Walking Speed: 86,4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 129,6 km/h
Jump Jets:     None
Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor Type:    Lexington Ltd. High Grade with CASE Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
  4 Defiance Model XII ER Medium Lasers
  1 Model 2B Guardian ECM
  1 Coventry Five-Tube LRM 5
Manufacturer:  Coventry Metal Works
  Location:    Coventry
Communications System:  Cyclops 14
Targeting & Tracking System:  Cyclops-beagle

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The STO-5A originated from a lance leader of the Donegal Jaegers: Leutnant
Jeffrey van der Mayklokjes.
As a leader of a recon lance in an STO-4A Stiletto he often had problems with
fast enemy light mechs ordered to intercept him and his lance. His weapon
systems had just too little firepower to defend himself and so he had to rely
mostly on superior maneuvering and the firepower of his comrades!
All that got worse as one of his streak launchers developed an electronic bug:
The weapon fired even without a valid lock on target or sometimes canceled his
order to fire even if achieving a perfect lock on! Several tries to repair the
system failed and when he even lost the other launcher in a fierce fight
Leutnant van der Mayklokjes decided that it's time to do something about it!
After some bargaining with a supply officer he got his hand on four brandnew
Defiance Model XII ER medium lasers!

==Capabilities:==
The Leutnants tech simply replaced both streak launchers and their ammo with
the four ER medium lasers!
In its next fight the new field refit surprised any opposition with its
intense firepower. It still had its LRM for harrassing and its main firepower
was independent of ammo now.
Another good feature in the Leutnants eyes was that "its heatsinks have
something to do now so i haven't to worry 'bout being cold in my cockpit!"
The success of the new variant cought the eye of an employee of CMW and after
some negotiating a limited run of the -5A left the Stiletto assembly line on
Coventry.

==Variants:==
Leutnant van der Mayklokjes even suggested an -5B variant that dropped all
weapons, the CASE and half a ton of armor for four medium pulse lasers.
So far no prototype was built.

==Deployment==
Entering limited production in 3064, the design appears in staunchly loyal
units such as the Royal Guard and Alliance Jaegers.

Quite similar to the Jenner in weapons layout, something between the two official variants as they are mentioned in TRO. Fast and well armored, it would be an excellent spotter if it was equipped with C3 IMO.

Thanks, cain! Wink

And SD gives a good summary as always! Wink Wink
The official laser variant strayed too far from the original weapon loadout for my taste and as i looked at the picture my variant intantly assumed shape (?) !
If you want a more active recon role just skip the ECM for a BAP.
Or as a C3-spotter drop the ECM for a slave and half a ton of armor!
You can even drop the LRM, ammo, CASE and ECM for a C3-Master!!

I posted this once before and it popped to mind when you posted the challenge...

               BattleMech Technical Readout

Type/Model:    Hollander BZK-F3B
Tech:          Inner Sphere / 3055
Config:        Biped BattleMech
Rules:         Level 2, Custom design

Mass:          35 tons
Chassis:       Coventry BZK-III Endo Steel
Power Plant:   175 Omni Fusion
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets:     None
Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor Type: Lexington Limited High Grade Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
  1 Corean Light Gauss Rifle
  2 Martell Medium Lasers
Manufacturer:  Coventry Metal Works
  Location:    Coventry
Communications System:  TharHes Muse 54-58K
Targeting & Tracking System: Cyclops 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
         Faced with the superior range and firepower of the Clan invaders, the
Steiner military wanted a light, fast 'Mech with superior long-range
firepower. Many design firms offered plans featuring LRM racks and PPC's, but
the contract went to Coventry Metal Works.
         Their design, tagged the BZK-F3 Hollander, eliminated the heat
buildup from PPC's and the danger of ammo explosion inherent in LRMs by
mounting the massive Poland Main Model A Gauss cannon in the 'Mechs's right
torso. This unorthodox design would provide unprecedented firepower in a light
'Mech, enough to take down other light 'Mechs in one shot.

==Capabilities:==
         Intended to engage light and medium 'Mechs at extreme range and
eliminate them quickly, the Hollander mounts a single Gauss cannon around
which the entire 'Mech is built. The Gauss cannon provides devastating
firepower and range but also poses some inherent design limitations.
         The Gauss cannon is so heavy that the design proved outmatched and
quickly destroyed in the field. The Lyran high command in a desperate attempt
to recoup its finical looses began selling dozens of BZK-F3s on the open
market. Several found there way into the hands of Mercenaries working for the
FWL. These units quickly upgraded there Hollanders by removing the Poland
Gauss cannon and replaced with the lighter Corean Light Gauss cannon which
allowed for an additional two tons of armor and the addition of two medium
lasers. In one swift motion these Mercs turned a weak design into a notable
front line fighter on par with the Steiner Wolfhound and Kurita Panther.
