I've been debating myself the pros and cons of each system, and trying to figure out which is a better building block. I thought a small discussion might be enlightening. Off the top of my head, I can see that each system has advantages and disadvantages.

C3 pros:
Easier to get
Weighs less (overall)
Can link together an entire company
Easier to retrofit slaves
Master carriers may threaten with artillery bombardment if enemy comes too close

C3 cons:
Master systems are heavily vulnerable, and the network as a whole cannot function if it is damaged.

C3i system pros:
Cellular network makes it difficult for an enemy to take down the whole network
Easier logistics (only one type of part)
Less worry about having a weak link (due to less firepower, armor or speed to mount the master computer)

C3i cons:
Difficult to get: Only Comstar and Word of Blake can supply
May only link a demi-company at a time

In general, I tend to lean towards C3i, especially when forces contain units of lower weight values. Five tons is a lot to suddenly sacrifice on your lighter machines. However, I'm very interested to hear people's opinions and any experience they might have with either system.

I don't play with C3 much, but the few times I have it was with the regular C3. When used properly, it is devastating.

i much more prefer C3i over C3 do to it greater flexibility.

With C3 you are forced to have a 'lead' unit and most cannon C3m are poor machines. For me, the ability to link 6 units of any type for only 2.5t per unit with only the need to supply 1 type of item [c3i vs c3m and c3s] beats the 12 units max and TAG for a regular C3 system.

Besides, most battles in BT are still company or smaller with 4 to 6 units a standard engagement. yes, if you can get 12 units on field all linked you got an advantage but its not that much more than 2 C3i networks.

I also think that a C3i network inspires a better type of play with a C3 unit than C3m systems. time and again i have seen players build a C3 Company with 3-4 lights, a few masters, and a gank of ranged support on the idea of getting a missile shot at 21 hexes with a 1 range. this is a poor use of a C3 network IMHO.

instead, the unit should be build around standard doctrine of a few forward scouts/harassers, a few support, and a butt load of bruisers. get in a mix it up like a non-C3 unit but now with the added ability of better coordination on shots. THAT is the best way IMHO to use a C3 network because when NOT if your network fails your only an ECM and 1 ML less than the other guy per unit.

just my 2 c-bills.

*cough* Like the merc unit games I ran a few years ago where you had a 3 gauss Thunder Hawk? Razz Those first turn long range gauss hits that were so devastating? Very Happy

The C3i is - as its name implies - the much more advanced system.

Its pros vastly outweigh its cons.

After having recently faced WoB C3i units, ECM has now become an obligatory piece of equpiment for my Clan forces.

Goodness, a C3 network would be a piece of cake to face - the C3 master carrier could measure its battlefield life-span in seconds, headhunting would carry a whole new meaning.

Apart from that, it suffers from almost crippling inflexibility. Simply chosing a design that carries a master computer is a pain in and of itself. With C3i, the WoB player simply chooses his forces and if there is more than one C3i unit, all is the better.

In the last C3i vs Clan battle, the WoB forces regularly had much lower to-hit numbers than the Clanners. A whole new era of BT-play has started for me, I consider C3i the single most important innovation for the IS.

Hence why all standard C3 Master carriers must be custom built. The Canon ones suck, there is no argument there. But a properly built C3 company can and will smoke anything it comes in contact with. And if they can snipe down the Primary Master carrier from maximum range while it's weapons (which should all be long range like Gauss Rifles and ER Large Lasers and ER PPCs... Smile Just ask Mordel, and Seraph, and anyone else who played in my MegaMek campaign a few years back. The Thunder Hawk that was Mordel's ride never took any damage to speak of. One time it took a lucky head hit that it SURVIVED thanks to glancing blow rules (which I implemented manually at that time - though they are now in the MegaMek engine).

I can't remember but can the two work together in the same network?

Nope. Completely incompatible. Which is one reason the Combine was very leery of the Tessen scout 'Mech until it was redesigned without C3i.
