Overview:
Whilst in battle against the myriad forces of the Horde, it came apparent that the pirate army was making use of machines not seen anywhere else. This has made it all the more apparent that the Horde has found and is making use of Star LEague era production facilities, or ,as the Stonkins have feared, they have secured and put to use the main production facilities on Evermore. One of the main machines that is seen more often than the other unique mechs is the medium mech dubbed the Fiend. While one of these machines is not much of a worry, they are usually found in large numbers and attack en masse.
Capabilities:
The Fiend is 40 tons of trouble. It has decent mobility for a mech of its weight class, and its speed is about average. For weapons it carries a large laser in its right hand, and the left has been replaced with a quintuplet array of machine guns set in a star pattern. While this load out is not much to worry about for larger machines in one mech, the Horde rarely do things like other armies the Stonkin family has fought. These machines are usually deployed in large numbers, on average ten to twelve at a time. One large laser can be dealt with. A company of large lasers at the same time is a different story. And while the payload listed here is the most common mech encountered, the Horde seem to delight in cobbling together what ever they can bolt to a chassis. There have been Fiends found to have nothing but medium lasers, or PPCs and small lasers, missiles, and an assortment of other weapons, doo dads, and odds and ends. One model was found to have all the jumpjets mounted on one side in a giant thruster assembly. The Fiends recovered by Stonkin Mech INc forces show the design is not an omnimech, nor particularly modular in design. The changes in weaponry and performance are accomplished with the skill and prescision of a bricklayer. Parts bolted on at odd angles, wires protruding in dangerous places, and usually ill armored ammo bins. The ammunition carried by the Fiends has been used as a last resort weapon as well, much to the dismay of many Stonkin pilots. If damaged severly enough, or possibly at a pilots whim, the Fiend will dash forward and get as close as possible to the mech it is attacking, and find a way to ignite the machine gun ammunition. It is believed that the ammo bins are actually rigged with a detonator wired to a button in the cockpit. At least three salvaged Fiends show this arrangement. It is not known if all Fiends are so wired, or just if the pilot has wished it so.
Configuration / Variants:
While the large laser variant is the most common, the Horde mechanics and pilots seem to take pleasure in "modifying" their machines to suit personal tastes.
Battle History:
All battles against the Horde have been recorded if possible and researched for the chance of finding a weakness to exploit. There have been instances of a company of Fiends suddenly leaping from cover and charging into the midst of a mixed comapny of heavy and assault designs. While the heavier unit was eventually victorious, the win came at a heavy price. All twelve large lasers targeted the Stonkin FellHammer at the first and dropped the 75 ton warmachine in its tracks. They immediately began to maneuver around and plow away with constant machine gun fire at the sides and rears of the assault machines. Several Fiends were put down easily by the accompanying Mjollnir and Odin assault mechs. At the sight of their fellow Horde pilots falling, three of the machines ran directly up to the Mjollnir and detonated their ammunition. One had actually jumped onto the top of the mech, hugging the assaults cockpit. The explosion was devastating, igniting the Mjollnirs own AC/20 stock and ripping the machine to pieces. Resulting shrapnel pelted near by mechs, Horde and Stonkin alike. The remaining Fiends were then summarily cut down in hot Stonkin fury and the remains demolished to bits of scrap metal.
Deployment:
The Fiend is only in use with the pirate army called The Horde. _________________ one by one the rabbits are stealing my sanity....
