Had to reformat my drive.
Unsure of what happened, but after an hour on the phone with HP support (next to no help) and Verizon DSL support (very helpful in determining what was wrong) it was determined that reformatting was my best option.
Luckily I had most things backed up so I didn't lose much--mostly just some mechs from HMP I hadn't saved.

| You may want to check your system out to see if your computer actually has the horse power to run XP. In my job we've found out that if you don't have atleast 256meg of ram XP runs slow. If your machine isn't better then a 500 mhz machine it runs half way too. Now if you just used the upgrade to put XP on your machine you may had something there that didn't like it. Who knows?!
As to Linux, I use that daily in my job (Its what we run our servers on) Linux is great but its not supported all the well enough to satisfy the novice user like windows does. So I'd think really hard before I'd replace my operating system with it. An example, my Vice President of systems loves Linux and is a master of it. Yet on his machine he as both Linux and XP Professional because how important it is to have a window's based operating system. Oh and I work for an ISP here in my state as a director of operations.
Just an opinion for you to look at from another view. Hopefully you've fixed it already. Good luck.

Tell me that. I'm still installing programs again, I'm realizing now how much junk I had in that hard drive

| Oh yeah. I had to move all my files from my old Pen II 333 to this new Pen IV 1.5 and it was a bear. I had to go through 2 hard drives to make sure I got them all, and when I was done I forgot about a few files I'll have to get at a later date.

I had just backed up a ton of stuff so I didn't lose very much (except the time to put it all back). I've learned from others that frequent backing up saves lots of headaches.

I can now say that this may have turned out to a more postive thing than a negative.
Because I reformatted I only had the base McAfee anti-virus on it, so I uninstalled and when out and bought Norton System Tools 2002.
I know it's been under 8 hours since I loaded it, but so far I'm very impressed. All the things I had to promt McAfee to do Norton does automatically, plus (obviously) it does tons more.
Norton Securites is starting to look good too.

| If it makes you feel any better, Norton's is all we use at our work (ISP) and on all my machines here as well.

I've never heard a bad thing about Norton, and so far I can see why.

A question for anyone else using Norton Systemworks...
I've noticed that my temp internet files "fill up" much quicker than they used too. Is that someing the Norton might be causing?
It's not an issue as I delete them before I sign off every day, it's more of a curiosity.

I also have a question.
How do you back up a drive?
My 98 is acting funky. And since it is 6 years old. and has never been formatted. and is about to get a new drive. I though I would do it. just to be save.
