Just some random thoughts from TotalCon…pics to follow soon.
“Cornered Prey”, a BattleCorps scenario that was run at the convention, may be the worst designed “official” scenario I have ever played in my life. I was on the Blakest side, and my side literally did everything right...the other side was Crescent Hawks and did just about everything wrong that you could possibly do in a scenario, and they still wiped us off the map. What salvaged the game was we took the reinforcements the Crescent Hawks were supposed to get and used them to make the battle even. If anyone knows who the guy that wrote that scenario is, ask him how the Blakests are supposed to achieve their victory conditions. After playing it, and then reading the scenario, I don’t see any way possible.
I have never seen more mechs miss their kicks and then blow their pilot checks in my life.
There is nothing better than begging to be hit in the head--because that’s where the armor you have left is--and then being hit in the head. And there is nothing funnier than seeing that player celebrate having been hit where he has armor only to roll two for his consciousness check.
There were two scenarios that had the old LAMs in them. One of them was run by a GM no one around here had ever heard of and used “variant” game rules that were so bad that the reports by the players he had mentioned the scenario could be used to induce vomiting in case of poison overdose. The second scenario (a two-parter that had one LAM in the first portion and six LAMs in the third) used the old official rules and they worked great in the roles the scenario had for them.
It is entirely acceptable to pass up needing fours and sixes at the front of a heavy mech to decide to roll at the back of jumping pulse monkey needing tens and twelves. It’s even better when you core the SOB.
While it only came up in discussion, someone really needs to look at the “new” partial cover rules. According to the rules, (presuming the front/rear arc) if I hit a mech standing in depth 1 water from the shoreline, I hit the mech as long as I don’t hit the legs--meaning I roll 2,3,4,6,7,8,10,11,12 for location. But if I’m standing in depth two water I hit the mech depth one water only when I hit the legs--meaning rolling 5 or 9? How is that even close to equitable?
Funniest line of the convention…I was running an Akuma and fired on Mordel. I was rolling my damage in groups, telling Mordel what was coming “These are groups of five; these are groups of two; these are ones” as I was rolling dice. After I was done with my fire our friend Merl rolled and hit with a pair of autocannons from his King Crab. Without missing a beat, Merl picked up two pair of dice and told Mordel, “These are groups of twenties...”
Newer players don’t know how to play 3025 mechs. Old time players, even those that don’t play the game much anymore, never forget. Newer players seem to panic at seven heat. Old time players don’t even blink until they get to 12. That’s why they beat you.
I played Battletech for over 24 hours in the past four days (4 Thursday, 8 Friday, 12 Saturday, about 2 this morning) and I had no mechs shot out from under me the entire time. I didn’t kill many, but I was well into the “positive” column for the weekend.

Most of the thing make me smile... missed piloting checks make me think whether there are small cocpits to blame (they seem to be pretty popular with the Blakists lately).
Oh, and one question Chihawk... Aren't the bad guys (WoBlies) supposed to melt like snow when the REAL heros (Hawks) show up no matter the odds?

In the fiction I have no problem with it...but in a scenario that people are playing? Sorry, make it so each side has a chance to achieve their victory conditions. _________________ www.210sportsblog.com
