There is a feeling that's usually brought up when viewing the Marik and Liao refits of the Marauder, a machine brought together from whatever was at hand. I don't know if it was intended, but the WHM-6T seems to be left cheated out of it's main schtick. It's main guns now have the firepower similar to an overheated Marauder, which is hardly an impressive feat to achieve for heavy 'Mech bent on long to medium rage blasting. Heavier armour helped a bit, but the close range weapons are still not enough to make this into a full blooded brawler on par with Orions and Thinderbolts. MGs and small lasers can tick the damage up a bit, but thenyou are in minimal range of your main guns which I'd like to use despite the fact that my heat will crawl up rather quickly. Talking about better rate of fire is also not entirely true. WHM-6R can stand an fire it's entire short rage bracket and one PPC for building up 4 heat. This guy can manage short range bracket and AC/5 for 0 heat which roughly evens out with PPC every other turn (6T has two more MGs, 6R sheds a lot of extra heat). Both can manage movement heat by leaving off the small lasers. Overall I consider this to be a downgrade. +0.5 points for the story. It makes the 'Mech somewhat more paltable. |
The 'down-grade' feel was intentional. I wanted to go a different route than more traditional Warhammer refits and lower the heat burden. Since an AC-10 would have been a Cataphract clone, I decided on the AC-5 (which at least matches the remaining PPCs range). And just like you pointed out so well in your analysis, I mentioned in the fluff that many MechWarriors assigned to the -6T are more than a bit leery about losing that peeper. But, I look at like this: it's only lost 5 points off the long range bracket in exchange for more armor and a good bracketed heat curve. That was my intent, to make it more survivable and able to accomplish most of the old 'Hammer could do.

Well, the problem is, that you're loosing the ability to cause piloting rolls at range, which is a major let-down of downgrading the PPC. I figured out that the the downgrade factor couldn't have been overlooked by you, as it's rather obvious. As I mentioned in the review, the downgrade also manages to create he feeling of technological desperation of the periphery nation. Perhaps it could be interesting to play with the idea and find-out whether there wouldn't be other solutions to this. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
