Thread necromancy. So we do now have rules for tripods and they are good.
Coupled with marginally useful superheavy rules, the resulting Colossi aren't necessarily overpowered. They shift the balance from firepower to near-excessive armour.
The main advantage of the tripods is the expanded mobility and firing arc, both needed for the woefully slow Colossi (especially the Ares).
So, what's your take? _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

The tripods seem stronger than either quad or humanoid chassis. They seem more like a must have, rather than an option... _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

They are too slow. Make speed is the same as a 100 tonner, most seem to average 2-3 for the most part. They are IMO nothing more then mobile pillboxes. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Superheavies are slow indeed, but three legged chassis is also available for standard sizes AFAIK and there their abilities seem to outshine both old chassis types. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Shoot one of the legs off and it falls. Things have two or four legs for a reason.
While a cool idea, I am not sure if the tripod mechs are going to be any more effective then quads. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Well, quads without one leg are about as effective as two-leged tripods. The tripod, however has the same amount of space as the humanoid machine, can twist torso in turret-like fashion and can perform lateral shift, which generally means that the mech simply doesn't change facing, it just twist torso. When it indeed does change direction it costs it only 1 MP to turn around.
And what price do they pay? 4 ton cockpit and 10 percent heavier internals. The only real drawack is that you need to put armour to cover the third leg... _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Turrets can be put on quads, so you can have the walking tank effect given the current rules.
So why only have 2, 3 and 4 legged machines? Why not just go out and make a six legged machine? _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Turret can indeed be put on a quad... for additional tonnage and critical space. Tripod has it almost for free and with massive amount of space and far broader field of fire as there are still regular arms on it. The flexibility of tripod arrangement can't be really matched by quad with turret (not to mention two specialised pilots providing piloting bonuses and nullifying multiple target modifiers). _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Why stop there. I have quite a few centipedes in my basement. They are agile little buggers. Let's turn that into a concept and create designs with 30 or 34 legs!! _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

30+ seems a bit excessive...but what about an 8 legger and make a true "spider"? _________________ The JadeDragon
