First off, does anyone but me think the Vixen battlemech looks -way- too much like a LAM? Which brings to mind a question, when FASA dropped the IIC's on all of the Unseen due to their 'derivative' nature, why wouldn't that include the Vixen? Myself, I have a Vixen mini I modified into an Airmech mode. But of course, I am a huge LAM fan in general, as soon as I heard of RP ceasing production on the Unseen, I started the Phawk hoarding.

The Vixen does look derived, but it is different enough to warrant not being Unseen.

LAM's are cheap. I was once a huge LAM fan, but that was because I liked how they were prone to abuse.

I usually use them as a version of the philosophy of several mechs. Fast, moderately hard-hitting, but they go down fast when you start hitting them. As long as you keep to IS tech, they aren't too bad, but once I used the Lvl-3 movement modifier rules from Maxtech with a clan-tech LAM with the TC/pulse combo and it was just ugly.

The only thing missing IMHO about the LAM is the "E"

I never liked it's quirky "I don't fit in" attitude in the game world as a whole, and it winds up being a munch abuse mech instead of a cool piece of perhaps say long lost tech.

Hey, hey, hey. Lay off of my little LAM buddies now. They and the Warhammer were what originally got me started playing Btech, back in 1990. They are a bit Munch-vulnerable though. The whole problem is the min/max attitude some people have. I don't like the LAM's because they can be abused, I like them because I think they look good, and I grew up a Robotech fan. I usually played a mech with a buttload of LBX's against them, especially with the IS LBX-2 and LBX-5 and their better range.

Dang, I just can't shut up on this thread, can I?

P.S. Horhiro, much as I hate to admit it, that was a funny remark.

I can see your points Vard, and if the LAM rules had been leveled correctly( as the Quad rules) to the regular mech rules, they could have been a very kewl addition to the game.

Especially as a LosTech item. It may have even given more players a reason to play AeroTech and BattleSpace and those games might have thrived rather than floundered.

Think about LAMs in the Star League era. What were they probably used for? Can you say covert ops? A unit that can fly from a dropship concealed behind a moon for instance, make the flight to a planet and re-entry, then land anywhere. In air mech mode they can cross any obstacle, they don't use their fuel and they don't have to land after jumping. Plus they can convert to mech mode and submerge. How much better can you get? Get me one fitted with a Guardian and a Beagle. Energy weapons only and the limiting factor is pilot endurance.

And like the Exterminator from TR2750, they all died. You have a very valid point, they were probably used for Covert Ops and maybe some protection of very high dignitaries. Think how cool a pair of LAMs fly over the Star Port then convert and land to give personal protection to some head honcho.

Book LAMs are not that bad, but come on, home many of you did noit tinker with them to make them ruthless. As some guy said, "THEN CARRY LBX's MAN" If LAMs were semi common and as nasty as players can make them, then you would see legions of LBX mechs...... then you would not see LAMs and more. Thus back to square one. DO they look cool, hell ya, and fun to through at PCs just for fun and hear them whine. O yeah make sure there can be no salvage.

AWAD- LAMs, Not a front line unit mech

an LBX is a threat to an LAM but not that much of one.

If the LAM in hybrid mode is treated like a VTOL, LB-X Flak affects it quite normally.

I don't think a LAM is ever considered a VTOL, so an LBx would be fired normally (depending on ammo) against it unless it was in "fighter" mode.

Tactical Handbook pg. 49, Airmech mode section. "An Airmech does not hace to land at the end of its turn. It can continue to fly at its Jump MP as long as it is capable of flight. In this case the LAM is treated as a VTOL and uses all the VTOL's movement and elevation rules."

As far as I know, those are the last official published rules for LAMs.

LBX AC's can rip them new arses if used right. Modified Jagermech with LBX-2 and LBX-5's instead of the straight 3050 version.

Yeah, we've had to invent a few rules for LAMs, for the few times they get brought up. The 'No XL engines' thing, for example.

Or do I need to post the Vampire LAM, again, to remind people of what cheese really is?
