Like say merging heavy ferro-fibrous armor and Lamellor ferro-carbide armor with the hardened armor type? How about reflective armor & reactive armor?
Given I have no idea where the think tank path comes from.... no. I have used RPG characters to create in game weapons during a campaign.
The character took a rotary ac, combined it with an AC/20, double mounted them on a turret base, and equipped a set of prototypes on a dropship. The mental image was much like the Gatling Gun turrets for China in CnC Generals. It was a anti-fighter/anti-boarding vessel close defense gun. The rules followed RACs (except roll on cluster @ x2 rof) and the weight was terrible. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

The Think Tank Life Path originated from LosTech rulebook. i think the rules for the Think Tank Life Path were put in AToW or they might be downloadable at bg.battletech.com. _________________ "Okay friendlies, you're not paid to be exclusively a 'MechWarrior', vehicle/spacecraft crewer, fighter pilot, or infantry trooper.
