I have been playing some more campaign like games using MekHQ (part of the Megamek family) and have found the base Union to simply be impractical for its job.
So here is my revision:

I started by upping the weight so as to get more tonnage to work with for the design.
I upped the crew from 3/5/6 to 4/12/6 in order to give the craft enough MPV to provide full support for the vehicles operation.
I then added some passengers to the unit. Combat units are expected to field an array of support personnel that simply cannot fit on a standard Union. Core among these is the company Doctor and his 4 nurses/medics. I included enough extra quarters to hold the unit's administrator/logistics officer, 1 officer level guest, 1 passenger level guest, and 2 prisoners.
I upped the food stores to maintain a 31 day supply, upped the escape pods to 10 (100%), and reduced the fuel load to 93 1-g burn days (3 months).
I upped the Heat Sinks to allow the Nose and each For-Side to fire all of its weapons.
I split the unit Bays into 3 Mech and 1 Aero and upped the door count to 6+1 allowing the Dropship to empty its bays in 1 round.
I upped the parts store to a full 1% of total mass.
Finally, I upped the cargo bay to 217 tons with an intended 100 tons for combat salvage transport. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

Further modified to account for additional needs.
Added 3 Light Vehicle Bays and 3 Heavy Vehicle bays to account for logistic vehicles, specifically a J-27 and Heavy Battlemech Recovery Vehicle per Lance.
