I prefer using the Compact Gyro over the HD gyro. Sure, HD can take 3 crits. But the Compact Gyro is half as likely to be hit.
And if you playing high enough tech, go compact and add component armor. 205-300 engine rating armored compact gyro will weight 5.5t vs a 6t heavy-duty and a 305-400 engine rated armored compact gyro will be 7t vs 8t for heavy-duty.
AND the component armor completely NULLs the 1st crit with a 50% chance of nullifying any subsequent hits. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

Exactly. Even armoured standard gyro might be better. Plus I'm not sure that this 'mech would survive long after being crited in the gyro anyway, or tht someone won't rather put some raw damage output to crush it's moderately armoured legs instead. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

I agree completely.
Funny thing about the compact gyro + armored Combo is that it almost pays for itself due to what amounts to a 50% discount on the armoring. An average 3 ton gyro ends up hat 5 tons when armored, the compact equivalent is 5.5. Weights are equal or even in compact's favor on smaller gyros. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior
