Actually, it isn't. You can't trade books either.

But can you imaging the bad PR some publishing house would get if they went after "Granny's Used Book Store"? Just look what happened when the recording industry went after some 12 year old using her granparents computer...they made that go away very fast.

Maybe. I mean, if you go by the Lars Ulrich Logic (Im the artist, i should get credit [Read :money] for my work), then it could be deemed illegal. But if a buddy is asking to borrow the book, just to see what the game is about, should I be tossed in the hoosgow for letting him look at my copy without paying FASA or Wizkids or whoever it is these days?

It would be infringement, not because he let you look at the book, but because you published the information contained in the book without permission.

Yes, they are technically violating the law. But you won't find any publisher (nor author) to enforce their copyright in cases like that simply because it looks bad for them. Sometimes PR is worth more then a few cents.

In a case like that I doubt there'd be any issue because you're actually advertising the game...there is a benefit to all parties.

The part about the sale of used copyright materials being a crime. Used bookselling is a very prominent activity, and there are several websites out there devoted to it, including big name sites like amazon and barnes & noble. Of course, on a related vein, e-books are starting to be pirated en masse, which must be a concern to publishers.

The laws that apply to books are the same ones that apply to software, music, movies, etc.

It's just in the case of book publishers don't care and don't enforce their copyrights (except in the case of a "stripped" or "coverless" book, or books that were supposed to be destroyed by bookstpres for credit...in that case the author gets no money from the book and the bookstore is guilty of fraud).

The recording industry has the same view of used CD/record stores.

Truth be told, can you imagine the backlash if both enforced their copyright in thses cases? It would be a PR nightmare...

Well, the pirated e-books could be solved to an extent with a password of sorts, sort of like the CD keys that game manufacturers are using.
The point has been made that going after book pirates would be a PR nightmare, and hes right. I mean look at the recording industry. They sue one 12 year old, take more heat than a turkey in the oven, and we havent heard from them since.
Having downloaded one, repeat ONE, scenario book, Ive decided that I need to get onto eBay to find the original so I can use it. Id rather not tote my comp around so I can get at the data when I need it. It just doesnt fit in my pack all that well.

The mobility problem is not as much of an issue for people with laptops or handhelds.

Well, some of us dont have laptops or handhelds, man. Im not that rich, yet.
Still, Id rather spend the sponduli on a real book. Some scenarios may have set up maps that span two pages. Id rather get the book, and -know- how everything is supposed to line up rather than squint at some badly scanned stuff from the net and have to guess at where everything is supposed to line up.
