The problem is though that when you go to classicbattletech.com, then click on a link(say forums), it takes you to classicbattletech.org. So, it very well is still most likely a DNS issue for you since you said you couldn't do a tracert on classicbattletech.org.
Did you actually add the entries in your host file?
Did you reboot after? not sure if you need to, but was just curious.

Yep I did it all, doesn't work
I found a way to bypass it, I had some friend log in to the boards and copypaste me the link, of a thread. I can navigate the board that way.
It just seems I have trouble with the
classicbattletech.org URL

Ok, found out that since I am under Win98 I had to alter slightly the hosts file
Did that, restarted, and still doesn't work
and now my "bookmarked post bypass" doesn't work 
though I suspect this time is the board being down for maintenance or something..

Also known as Microsoft Internet Explorer... 
I've had some really odd troubles too, like IE loading the wrong pages repeatedly.
Decided to switch to Mozilla. It seems to work.

I use Mozilla 
In fact, I've never used Microsoft IE (the tool of the devil) in the 10 years since I got on internet
I've talked to other people knowledgeable about the subject and it seems to be a problem with CBT server with DNS , and for some out of the Us countries.
It's an on/off thing, now it's working, now it doesn't *shrug*

I have stopped going there, I can rarely get thru, and I have spyware alerts come up when I look at certain posters on the board.
