Tabletop Gaming, a magazine over here in the UK (difficult to find but gaming shops usually have it) rated Battletech as one of the richest five tabletop games as far as storyline goes. They rated it over Dungeons and Dragons because it has a rigid set canon which is followed to the extreme by alot of gamers, which hints at its completeness. Most D & D players make thier own stories and universes. (Im not really up on D&D so i didn't read that much into the article).
Also, suprisingly, one of the highest rated Tabletop games is Starship Troopers, never played it but i know a few who have, and they love it. Anyone here played?
the thing that sets battletech aside is not its gameplay, although it does vary from other games, is its richness and its imagery, you can picture these mechs relaly well in your head duelling. And it creates vivid images, even when all you have is cardboard cutouts and a flat paper map!
Also, another great thing is that, unlike D&D, you can really play at changing history with Battletech, one of the main reasons people enjoyed Battetech (back to the magazine) is the way the story is set up, it encourages players to go back to a canon story and act it out again, to see what happens!
I'm going a bit off topic here so i'll stop, but its a great little magazine if you see it. This one was a back issue from a few years, as most battletech inside now is DA, but there is a great article in a recent edition. 'Dark Age: Battletech revolution or devolution?' Not found this one yet! but sholud be an interesting read. Its great to find a gaming magazine which isn't biased in some way.

This is true. However. CBT has much more stratgy behind the game. while DA is just a slugfest.
I will admit that I haven't read any of the novel for DA. But I did read most of the first one to come out....PU...boy, it was a stinker.
DA one and only redeaming value. is that thier mechs do look pretty cool. But this is negated by the fact they are collectable. And although I do like certain collectable things (like YGO) I really have no need to buy a mech I don't want and try to trade it for one I do want. becuase most of the time. the mech you want...is the mech everyone wants.
But I will agree with Wanallo. I believe the storyline is what makes and keeps btech alive

I think the mechs look too over done, they look like something out of Anime, especially the Atlas and the Falcon mechs.

LOL, well that would explain it! Some Anime stuff does look good, but i like the blocky, efficient millitary style of the old mechs, its more like the real world. You wouldn't find an Abrams tank with Spikes on the back and big fins and things all over it.
Though that would be a great sight!

I don't think you can put too much fault on DA given as how the Mech designs have been getting more Anime'ish looking ever since the IIC 'Mechs in the original 3055 TRO. Although, admittedly, they have always been Anime'ish considering that a good portion of the 3025 designs were taken from Animes.
This is one of the reasons I usually don't care much for Clan designs. Most are just too freaky looking. I much prefer the tankish looking designs.

Being the pessimist that I am, to me it looks like they are just trying to find a way to re-sell us the same thing yet again (maybe some execs from Wizards of the Coast have moved over to FanPro).
On a lighter, more comical note, if they brand this re-hash "classic BT", then what will we, the aging dinosaurs that shunned MW Dark Age, call the REAL classic BT after its release? How about "Classic-er Battletech", or maybe "Classic Battletech Classic"?
"Classic-squared Battletech"?

Well, I would think the 'new' Battletech would be considered 1 of 3 things: Classic Battletech 2.0, Classic Battletech 6th Edition, or just New Battletech.
Option 1: Might as well.
Option 2: Last set out was 5th Edition wasn't it?
Option 3: Given as how there is/was only one Battletech game anyway, there was really no reason for it to have been called 'Classic' in the first place given as how DA is called Mechwarrior and not Battletech. So in which case, it actually gives the 'classic' name purpose.

Well, hopefully they are true to their word and won't touch the rules. Just give the rulebooks a much needed revamping and release.
