The relevant starting law is the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 (so maybe I was 20 years off... must've been thinking of the fairness doctrine when I placed it in the 80s).

Grandmother had cataract replacement surgery done in the late 80s. Still going fine on the plastic lenses. And doesn't need glasses anymore either.

Dad's getting the same surgery in a couple year ...
