Would these be the next advancements in naval laser technology?

Also what about Ultra versions of the Naval Autocannons?

Would either the Clans or the Inner Sphere powers be looking into these?

Or is this kind of tech to costly and limited to have such research done?

Those modes are probably not practical for naval size weapons. Ultra-mode NACs might overheat severely for all I know, perhaps
it was never worth the heat sinks to build them. As for Pulse Lasers in Naval size, I`d suspect they`re rather useless. Why? Because the NLs are bank weapons, firing broadsides at huge targets far away. Getting a to-hit bonus wouldn`t really make sense there. Besides, multiple pulses might be too hard on the power systems aboard, they`re firing LOTS of guns and might overload if pulses go out-of-sequence because of battle damage etc.

I do not think the clans would care, since they look at spacers as being just higher then a merchant. And the IS would probably not want to bother, since warship tech is new to them and they need to spend the money elsewhere.

Just my opinion. (Like anyone cared)

Ultra Naval Auto Cannons sound like an awesome weapon to have mounted on the Broadsides of a huge warship to destroy all comers. Comparing real world with game world here is why I would disagree with UNAC being created in the game (I served onboard the USS New Jersey for 3 years in the early '80s, with GQ stations in Turrets 1 & 3):

1) The feed mechanism for a regular NAC is a heavy working piece of machinery as it stands just trying to get a single round loaded that weighs upwards of 1 ton. To have an UNAC you would have to have a multiple feed tray mechanism that is constantly supplying projectiles and propellant on a continually rotating breech feed mechanism. Think of the feed mechanism on the Bradley IFV for the 25mm cannon only make it a 416mm cannon.

2) The feed mechanisms described above would have to number at least 2 each to have an "ultra" type weapon. You would have to devote quite possibly 4x the normal space and tonnage, or more, for all of the extra machinery for the feed trays, storage lockers, ammo lockers, etc. to maintain a constant supply of projectiles to make the weapon effective in combat as an Ultra NAC.

3) Recoil would be another factor to add to the equation. The 16" guns of the New Jersey had a recoil distance of 48" & almost 500,000lbs pressure when firing only 1 round. Now multiply this times 2+ rounds being continuously fired and you have massive amounts of force being exerted against the gun assembly.

Taking all of the above into account, and even allowing for a game conversion, you have the makings of a large scale disaster that could destroy your own ship. Another thought is to think of the pressures and forces exerted on the structure of your ship. You could bend/warp your vessles structure from using an AC of this size and type.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth.
