Overview:
With the possibility of Civil War, the Lyran Self Defense Center began looking to update and
refine its forces. In their battles with the Clan, the Lyran High Command had noticed a
trend in that time and again brand new designs showed an inability to survive for long
periods of time on the battlefield while antiquated designs continue to march on.
Under orders, a Combat Effectiveness Team at Defiance Industries began analyzing battle ROMs
in order to find out why. Their findings were ridiculed by several as it showed a strong
correlation between some of the newer pieces of equipment and the decreased life span of a
'Mech in combat. One piece of equipment was responsible for a larger percentage of the
decreased life span then any other: the extra light fusion engine.
With this in mind, another team at Defiance Industries began designing a 'Mech prototype
that could compete with modern 'Mechs and still retain a long life span. After a period of
nine months, the development blue prints for the XJ-921-IS were presented to the LSDC.
Approval was given for the production of a prototype for test trials. Meanwhile, in
anticipation of the Death Scythe's success, Defiance Industries made preparations to
decommission their Berserker 'Mech line and replace its molds with those of the Death
Scythe.
Capabilities:
The objective of the Death Scythe is a lofty one that many have attempted but very few have
ever managed. The Scythe shares many similarities to the Marauder II and Mad Cat line of
'Mechs. Its 100 ton chicken walker design offers magnificent protection in a compact and
mobile form. In addition, the Scythe's thick armored hide weighs in at fifteen tons and
offers a theoretical 80 percent protection rating for its weight class. This is a
necessary feature in order to compete with other modern combat machines.
At the core of the Death Scythe lies a Vlar 300 fusion engine that can power the 'Mech up to
speeds of 54kph and provide enough energy reserves to power all of the 'Mechs systems. A
standard engine was used despite its great weight do to the findings of the Combat
Effectiveness Team. While 54kph may not be fast by most 'Mech standards, it allows the
Scythe to maneuver on the battlefield just enough to keep up with most heavy designs.
The design team anticipated that they would be mounting weapons that required ammunition and
that is why they integrated into the armor and chassis cellular ammunition storage equipment
or CASE, which providing any ammo bins with protection in the event of an ammunition
explosion. This light weight design feature has proven to be the savior of countless 'Mechs,
pilots, and equipment. In the event that one of the ammunition bins should explode, the
CASE would direct the force of the explosion out special panels in the 'Mechs back and allow
the pilot to retreat the crippled 'Mech to safety.
Unlike most 'Mechs, the Death Scythe does not have a primary weapon but instead carries a
primary weapons battery consisting of a LB 10-X Auto-cannon, an ERPPC, and twin Large
Lasers. This provides the Scythe with solid knockdown power. However, some criticize that
the Scythe has insufficient long ranged weaponry when compared to modern battlemechs. The
design team recognizes this criticism but feels that there is sufficient coverage.
The secondary weapons battery consists of six ER Medium Lasers, which are capable of laying
down withering firepower against all but the heaviest 'Mechs. It has been said that these
lasers can reduce a twenty ton 'Mech to scrape in less then ten seconds. In addition, the
Scythe mounts back up weapons consisting of a pair of medium lasers and a short range
missile rack. The medium lasers provide covering fire against light 'Mechs that flank the
Death Scythe. The SRM Six rack is used for anti-infantry, anti-tank, and a finishing weapon
against disabled 'Mechs.
Finally, construction of the Death Scythe can begin almost immediately do to the Scythe
using the same electronics and components found on the old Berserker line or using parts
that are easily shipped in mass quantities to Hesperus II, the only true limitation being
the specific metal molds that are required in order to construct the chas
