Overview:
In the later days of the Star League, the Crab quickly became the standard for SLDF medium
'Mechs. A combination of all-energy armament and sophisticated targeting and communication
systems made the design a prime raider behind enemy lines, and even saw use as a heavy recon
unit. Star League engineers however knew that the design could be improved, which eventually
led to CRB-27slb model that was rolled out to certain select Royal units.
Capabilities:
Building on the already impressive CRB-27 model, the CRB-27slb Crab was created as a truly
mobile heavy scout and raider. An endo-steel frame and a switch to double heat sinks saw an
improvement in the design's heat efficiency (even though 4 heat sinks were dropped) and
weight savings that were then devoted to mounting a Beagle Active Probe and Guardian ECM
suite, improving the 'Mech's recon abilities. Additionally, mobility was improved by
switching the standard 250 fusion engine for a type 300 extra-light engine, increasing its
top ground speed to over 95 kph. Jump jets were also added to the design, allowing it to
make leaps of up to 150 meters.
Offensively, the older large lasers were exchanges for a pair of the newly developed
snub-nosed PPC's, which shared the limits of the large lasers' range, but were much more
effective at ranges below 270 meters. The medium laser was repositioned to the head,
replacing the small laser, and a medium pulse laser was fitted into the space in the center
torso formerly occupied by the older laser. However, placing the medium laser in the head
did result in some cramped conditions for larger pilots.
Note: The CRB-27slb Crab has the following quirks: Easy to Maintain, Improved
Communications, Improved Sensors, Vestigial Hands, Cramped Cockpit, Non-Standard Parts
Deployment:
As indicated above, the CRB-27slb Crab was only assigned to certain select Royal units prior
to the fall of the Star League. Most were either destroyed in fighting the forces of the
Usurper or were taken with the forces that departed the Inner Sphere with Aleksandr
Kerensky. Those few that remained behind were lost in the First Succession War.
