One of the biggest deficiencies of Stefan Amaris? forces was in light mechs. The new
Jackrabbit, one of the biggest boondoggles of the Star League, proved not to be the answer.
A good light mech was desperately needed, and every available option was explored. The
Caribdis was born from a project at the Sandhurst Academy that tried to improve the Hussar.
The Caribdis, christened by Stefan Amaris himself, was built after a short
Capabilities:
The Hussar had speed and a large laser in its favour, but it lacked armor. Despite being
strangely popular, it was also near obsolescence thanks to newer units like the Talon and
the Spector. A heavier chasis was the answer. Able to carry a lighter engine, and with MASC
added for short speed bursts, the Caribdis was almost as fast as the Hussar, but with more
armor and guns. Amaris pilots loved the MASC and that guaranteed the approval of the design.
One of the most innovative features was the large laser housing, that gave it a larger
field of fire, almost like a turret. Former Hussar also pilots loved the armor, the maximum
posible for that chassis.
Deployment:
The Caribdis had a somewhat convoluted deployment. Some Mechwarriors didn't like it because
of the bad reputation of its ?parent? design, the Hussar. After some key victories, and the
rise of famous pilots like ?Charging Jack?, the mech began to become accepted.
One of the factories producing the Caribdis experienced sabotage. The MASC fitted there
was tuned in order to fail on the twentieth use. Caribdis losses rose, until the sabotage
was discovered. That factory was punished severely and a mass grave At the main gate
reminded the workers of the price of treason.
Variants:
Two variants are known. The first mounted ER Large Lasers instead of the original lasers.
The second, experimental and built only in small numbers, had twin turrets for the large
lasers.
Notable MechWarriors:
Captain Jack Novella. ?Charging Jack? was one of the most famous mechwarriors from the RWR
thanks to his obssesive tendency to charge with his mech in every combat. He started one
successful charge half a kilometer away from the target, a Hunchback, that ended with both
legs destroyed. ?Charging Jack? was one of the last victims of the tampering with the MASC
system. After his death, a deep study of the failed Caribdis? wreckage uncovered the
nature of the sabotage.
