Overview:
Being designed primarily for sale to the export market to fill the coffers of the Lyran
government, the Mjolnir is not a well respected 'Mech. However, knowing that the 'Mech has
some extreme flaws in its design has led many to underestimate it during its time on the
battlefields of the Inner Sphere. Knowing this, one son of a nobel wealthy noble family felt
this reputation would be something he could exploit. This would-be MechWarrior was also a
design engineer, and developed a model of the 'Mech that he felt would best be able to take
unwary enemies by surprise.
Capabilities:
Knowing the base design lacked speed and armaments, the young noble felt it would be
important to address both concerns at the same time. Therefore, he decided to mount a Type
175 extra-light engine. This would allow the machine to reach speeds of almost 120 kph even
before the triple-strength mymomer kicks in, at which point, it can reach nearly 130 kph.
The two tons this freed up could be used to increase its jump radius to 210 meters, as well
as double its ranged weapon payload, but he felt this was still not sufficient. Therefore,
he decided to replace the internal structure with endo-steel bones. However, he determined
that these were too bulky for the frame. Instead, he decided to use the widely decried
composite material to construct the framework "bones" of the 'Mech. Although a very fragile
material, these bones would be light enough to allow for another ton of weapons payload.
Knowing he still wanted more firepower, he replaced the cockpit with a more cramped design,
which then allowed him to place both a heat sink and a weapon in the vacant space. He also
ensured the controls were as intuitive as possible, so that even green pilots would have a
fighting chance in the machine.
Having freed 3.5 tons (one-half ton had already been used for another jump jet), he then
reviewed his weapon options. Knowing one of the other weaknesses of the design was a lack of
a truly effective way to keep the triple-strength mymomer at the correct activating
temperature, he decided he could use this newfound tonnage to obsolete this issue. Using
this tonnage, he mounted seven old-style 3 cm small lasers. Although these weapons were
centuries old, they would fit well with a design that attempts to close rapidly with the
enemy to get them into melee combat. He also decided to switch out the arm-mounted extended
range 3 cm laser for its older counterpart. Fired in conjunction with running, or firing
four of the smaller laser lasers, along with their larger extended range cousin that remains
mounted in the center torso of the machine uses all the capacity of the heat sinks on the
design, enabling the triple strength mymomer to remain functioning once activated. To
activate this advanced myomer, either a few seconds of laser fire as the machine closes, or
just a single full jump with a partial laser barrage will provide enough waste heat to do
the job.
Although easy to pilot, the composite structure is not a very common component, and the
'Mech itself still has a poor reputation. It is still suggested that pilots of such 'Mechs
should hang back until such time as they can ambush their enemies so they take as little
return damage as possible. One single hit can result in a 'Mech that is sidelined for weeks
in a repair bay.
Deployment:
So far, only a few units have received this model of Mjolnir, and only for field trials.
Although there have been some successes with the design, there have also been some
spectacular failures. One of the most notable of both came in one battle in which the young
noble who came up with the design used it to cave in the head of a Jade Falcon Shrike while
ripping into the back of a Gyrfalcon from the same Star. While reveling in the fact that he
took down two foes so much larger than him so quickly, the noble and his 'Mech died horribly
in the next instance; ripped to pieces by the talons of the three Eyries that made up the
remainder of that star as they conducted death from above attacks on his 'Mech while he was
distracted by his victories. Malvina's forces paraded his torn corpse through the streets of
the city he was defending as a warning to any others who would oppose their forces before
tossing his bloody body at the feet of his family, who were then burned alive in burst of
plasma fire for his crime of opposition.
