Overview:
Produced by the same company that developed the widely successful Urbanmech (Omnimech), the
Hunchback HBK-8S is designed to be a specialist city fighter, with 18 tons of Hardened Armor
providing the same level of protection as found on an Assault Battlemech. Four Jump Jets
provide excellent mobility in an urban environment, a vital asset for the -8S in particular
because its running speed is limited to 53 kph due to the Hardened Armor's effect on the
chassis' mobility.
However, the 200-rated LFE (Light Fusion Engine) suffers critical damage with the
destruction of a side torso, necessitating withdrawal once this occurs or else the 'Mech may
be completely destroyed. While the high Armor Protection increases the amount of punishment
the chassis can take before this happens, you cannot postpone the inevitable. The HBK-8S is
only a medium 'Mech, and cannot be expected to take on any Assault 'Mech one on one - the
difference in firepower is far too great for the Hunchback to have much of a chance outside
of an ambush scenario.
Despite this, many heavy 'Mechs - particularly Sniper or Missile Boat designs - are an even
match for the HBK-8S, with the Hunchback even holding the upper hand against models geared
towards longer range engagements.
Capabilities:
The HBK-8S is armed with two Snub-Nose PPCs mounted high up in the Right Torso to provide
the high pinpoint damage the Hunchback is well known for. Supporting the primary weapons are
a quartet of Clan AP Gauss Rifles, again mounted high up, in the Left Torso and fed by one
ton of ammunition located in the Center Torso. To enable the HBK-8S to not be restricted
solely to close-quarters engagements, a C³ Slave unit allows for the -8S to function as a C³
Spotter for friendly C³ capable units.
However, the design is more than capable of fighting within 90 metres of the enemy forces,
mounting specialised hand actuators to allow for better hand-to-hand combat. An advanced
computer system manages heat more efficiently than the standard model, making up for the
design mounting only 10 Double Heat Sinks on what would otherwise be a 'Mech that suffers
from overheating issues.
The Hunchback HBK-8S is subject to the following design quirks:
