Overview:
Although moderately accepted as a combat unit, the original Boreas was still more of a
proof-of-concept design for an Omni-QUADVee than a finished design. The Boreas 2 takes the
machine to its logical conclusion.
Capabilities:
The most noticeable deficiency of the original Boreas was its limited ground speed. To
address this, the designers fitted a type 300 extra-light engine to the frame. This both
increased the ground speed by 25 percent and freed up some 2 tons for additional
improvements. Knowing that QuadVees were already tight on space and that the extra-light
engine would consume some of the limited space, the engineers chose to forgo use of
ferro-fibrous armor or full a full endo-steel frame. Fortunately, an endo-composite frame
consumed far less space and still freed some crucial tonnage to increase the Pod space of
the design.
Using the original model?s configurations as a basis, new configurations were then developed
for the Boreas 2 to make use of the improved payload. The primary configuration retains the
original?s extended range PPC, but replaces the former?s Streak-6 launcher and its attendant
ton of ammunition with a standard 6 pack launcher of SRM?s tied into an Artemis V FCS and
equips it with two tons of ammunition. The medium pulse laser was replaced with an improved
heavy medium laser on each side. The design also comes equipped with an Angel ECM suite and
a light active probe.
For alternate configuration A, the engineers equipped the model with another ton of
ammunition for its HAG-20, 2 extended range medium lasers and an extended range small laser.
Alternate configuration B adds three extended range medium lasers and an extended range
small laser to the original?s Streak LRM-20.
Alternate configuration C included two anti-personnel Gauss rifles with a ton of ammunition
with a Watchdog CEWS.
The final standard configuration, D, tied it?s improved heavy large lasers into a targeting
computer with an ECM suite and light TAG providing additional options to the design.
To enable several of these models to be used as efficiently as possible, the weapons were
tied into a combat computer. However, these units are often difficult to maintain,
especially in the field.
Update: Since the previous report, a few more alternate configurations have been fielded:
Alternate Configuration Epsilon appears to be an anti-armor/infantry model with paired
plasma cannons and AP Gauss rifles fed by three and one ton of ammunition respectively,
backed by a pair of extended range medium lasers. A light active probe helps it detect
hidden targets.
Alternate Configuration Eta is the first to mount jump jets, allowing leaps up to 150
meters. For weapons, this configuration mimics the classic Griffin BattleMech, mounting an
extended range PPC and LRM-10 rack fed by two tons of ammunition.
Alternate Configuration Theta is a murderous close-in fighter, mounting four medium pulse
lasers and two extended range medium lasers all tied into a targeting computer. To help deal
with the excessive heat of this payload, two additional laser heat sinks have been added.
This configuration also comes equipped with an ECM suite and light active probe unit.
As more configurations are fielded, further updates will be posted.
